“If that’s true then…then she has saved my mate’s and my son’s lives. We have to find them, and we have to protect her,” I say.

I fall back on my ass, looking around the cave. My mate is alive and somehow, my son is alive. Now, I have to find them both, find all three of them before that other pack does.

I try to get my bearings while Jacqueline runs, but it’s hard. I’m still weak, I’m trying to hold on to her wolf and I’m holding my son against me. We have to stop frequently for him to nurse. After the first time, we heard howls, so we’d moved as quickly as we could.

The second time, it felt a bit safer, and while I began nursing, Jacqueline hunted for food and sniffed around to make sure we were safe.

While she’s gone, I keep my ears open for any sounds around us, but I watch my son as he nurses. I haven’t had much time to really look at him. He’s beautiful. A perfect little boy, even if he is a bit small. He’s a couple weeks premature, and I want to get home and have the pack doctor check him over. But his big appetite is a good sign.

“Do all babies eat that much, or is it just Alpha babies?” Jacqueline asks, walking back in our little area with four rabbits.

“He’s two weeks early, so I think maybe he’s catching up. But my mate

pup,” I say, looking up as she starts a small fire.

“Do you know where we are?” I ask.

“I was hoping you knew,” she says as she skins the rabbits. She holds them up to show me. “When we find water, we can wash these and then use them to help keep him warm.‘

I smile at her.

“What?” she asks.

“Are you sure you’ve only been out here a couple of months? You’re a pro at it.”

“I left in late August. Since there’s barely any snow on the ground, I assume it’s still October.”

“It’s actually early December. We haven’t had snow yet, or nothing that sticks to the ground,” I tell her.

“December? Already?” she asks, looking shocked.

“The days go by much faster when you’re running for your life and your freedom.”

“I guess so,” she says as she jams some heavy sticks into the rabbits after cleaning them. Then she leans the sticks against some rocks so the rabbits can cook over the fire. When they’re set, she turns to me.

I’d been looking at Rory, but when she doesn’t respond, I look up.

“You’re serious?” she asks.

“Absolutely. I don’t joke about freedom. Honestly, the guys were thrilled that I wanted to rewrite the laws. It’s boring to them, but for me, it’s a great way to see what needs to be changed. It’s a slow process, but we’re working through it. And our territory is getting larger. For every pack where we killed the Alpha and ranked members, we’re holding competitions so our pack members have a chance to become Alphas. Two of our allies‘ Betas have already won a pack.
