I finally had to stop, collecting some plants and berries and using the small amount of condensation in the trees around us, I was able to grind everything into something like a fluid. Needless to say, Rory was not happy and didn’t like it, but I did get enough into him that it took the edge off his hunger for a short while.

I considered looking for a wolf den and seeing if I could find a nursing mother, but I was too worried about stumbling across a mother bear. By myself, I cannot overpower a bear, especially not an angry mother. And with Rory, I couldn’t risk it. Nikki trusted me to keep him safe and that’s what I’m going to do.

I have no idea what direction I’m going in anymore. Exhaustion is starting to take over. I don’t know how far Nikki is behind me or if David and Cash captured her. I can’t wait to find out. I need to get this pup to his pack, and hope that they and Rory’s father don’t kill me.

I find a place to sit and rest, letting Serena focus on the forest around us as I try to make another plant–based concoction for Rory. He had fallen back to sleep for a while, but it was a fitful sleep. Now that he’s awake, I know I need to feed him again. I’m getting worried that he’s not fussing like he was before. I know these plants are edible, I made sure of it and Serena confirmed it, but him being quiet when I know he’s hungry isn’t a good thing.

‘Serena, do you have any sense of packs or wolves in this area?‘ I ask her.

‘No,‘ she says, and I feel defeated.

I hold him against me, trying to warm him. On instinct he finds my breast. He latches on easily, but I have nothing to feed him, and he gets angry quickly.

“Here, Rory. I know you don’t like it. I know it’s not your momma’s warm milk, but it will help,” I say, trying to get him to drink the watery mixture of plants and berries again. This time, he spits it right

out.

“Come on, Rory, I need you to help me out here,” I say to him.

I feel Serena tense inside me.

‘Move. We have to move. NOW!‘ she says.

I’m up and running as fast as I can with a pup in my arms. I hold him against my chest as I run. I let Serena guide us, taking me in a zig zag pattern until we smell more water.

‘Get in the water. It will help cover our scent,‘ Serena tells me. While I focus on running and not falling, she focuses on the threat behind us.

I have just enough time to lay Rory down and turn before six large wolves rush up to us. They are all carrying clothes in their mouths, which they drop as they approach.
