guess, all that is to say, I’d like to stay here. I have more faith that the other packs in your alliance are like this one, but right now, I’m starting to feel settled. I’d like to keep it that way.”

“You’re more than welcome,” I say, Robin echoing my sentiments.

“But I need a job. I need to do something. I’m not used to being so idle,” she says.

“Oh, I have a job for you,” I say excitedly. Robin smiles, having caught the idea in my mind.

“What’s that?” she asks.

“I need someone to help me pour through these laws and start putting together our recommended changes.”

I watched Jacqueline follow Alpha Robin and Luna Nikkirinto Alpha Robin’s office. I waited, wanting to check on her after meeting with them. I like Jacqueline, enough that I wish that she and I were fated mates. I think we’d get along very well. She’s been through a lot, but she’s strong and I know that she’ll get through this.

I go to my office, finishing up some paperwork while I wait for her to emerge from Alpha Robin’s office. I haven’t had a chance to really check on her this morning.

When she exits the office, I hop up from my desk and step out of my office, just in time to fall into step beside her. She smiles at me, raising an eyebrow

“Do I have to worry that you’re going to start stalking me?” she asks, making me chuckle.

“Maybe. We’ll see. How did it go in there?”

She turns, looking back at Alpha’s office door which is closed again. “It was good. I told them I wanted to stay here. And Luna’s giving me a job.”

“Good, I’m glad to hear it.” I look around and pull her into a private hallway. “How are you, after last night?” I ask quietly.

I’d been awakened to the sounds of Jacqueline yelling ‘No!‘ in her sleep. I’d worried about waking her up, but when she started to scream, I’d begun to shake her to help her wake. I’d had to block her punch as she started to come awake before she realized it was me and not Alpha David.

She shrugs. “I’m okay.

Now it’s my turn to raise an eyebrow. She shrugs again.

“I know it’s going to be a while before I can sleep through the night. I‘ ve been on the run for a long time. But even Nikki said that it gets better.”

“She would know. And I’m guessing she’s having her own nightmares. Hopefully, by staying here and feeling safe, your nightmares will go

“Oh, what idea is that?” she asks. Jacqueline has a fun sense of humor and it’s easy to tease her because she gives it right back. It’s another reason that I wish that we were mates. Whoever her fated mate is, he’s

“Well, I was thinking that you could help me lead training in the mornings. Alpha Robin needs his sleep having to get up all night with a new baby. I haven’t tested you yet, to know if you’re as good as a Beta should be,” I say, smiling when she narrows her eyes at me. “But, as a Beta, you would be stronger than most of our warriors and as a woman, you might be able to give our female warriors tips that can help them. I know that Alpha Nikki has been great in helping our female warriors find ways to use their agility to overpower a male warrior’s strength.”

“I’ll have you know that I am a well–trained warrior. As a matter of fact, I led sparring sessions back home for years,” she says to me.

“Years?” I ask, surprised.

“Yes, Beta. I’m that good. I mean, not every Beta is strong enough to start leading a training session at fifteen. But I’ll be happy to teach you a few things and get you up to speed,” she says, turning and walking backward, smiling as she taunts me.
