Since he’s been away from his pack two weekends in a row and I know he’s planning to stay an extra night at the end of this pack competition, he didn’t plan to come early. Instead, he’s going to come here Friday, and we’ll drive together to Alpha Robin’s pack where we‘ ll be staying for the weekend before returning here.

I had hoped that he’d arrive early on Friday morning, as anxious to see me as I am to see him. When he doesn’t arrive, I’m disappointed but I understand that something could have come up that needed his

attention.

When he hasn’t arrived by lunchtime, I’m even more disappointed. Is he reverting back to the Calvin that he used to be? The Calvin that marked and mated me several years ago?

By four o’clock, I know he’s not coming. He hasn’t called and he hasn’t answered my calls when I’ve tried to reach him. My disappointment is so strong that I have to fight tears. But I’m an Alpha. I can’t show weakness. So, I get my daughter ready, and I head to Alpha Robin’s pack.

A small part of me is hoping that he’ll be here, waiting for me, but when he’s not, it’s like I’m disappointed all over again.

“Hey…” Nikki says as she walks out to greet me. She looks, seeing that Calvin isn’t here and something on my face must show how upset I am, because she wraps me in her arms and holds me.

>“It will be okay,” she says quietly to me, and I nod against her

shoulder, fighting tears.

“I’ll take you and Athena to your room, and you can get settled. If you want, I can have dinner sent up to your

room.”

I shake my head. “No. I’m here to referee the competition. I know you have a lot of competitors in your packhouse this weekend. I need to be seen.”

“You are one fine Alpha, Amelia,” she says, before leading me inside to show me where my room is.

If only my mate felt the same way.

“Are you finally going to win your pack this weekend and leave me like you’ve been trying to do for weeks?” my Alpha, Dutton, asks me as I come downstairs with my bag in hand.

“You know it’s not like that,” I tell him.

Dutton is a damn good Alpha, and I never once regretted being his Beta. It was him, actually, that encouraged me to try out for a pack. I didn’t even compete for the first pack. It wasn’t until Alaric’s pack came available and I realized that I could still be close to my Alpha while having my own pack that I changed my mind.

Now, the idea has taken root, and I know that I want to have my own pack, to be an Alpha, and to have that legacy to pass on to my children. Someday. If I ever find my mate.

>Thad hoped, as many of the Betas did, that once our packs began

spending time together that we’d find our mates. But, just like our Alphas, it seems that our mates will have to come from packs outside of our group. I’m just not sure how I’ll ever find her.

I’ve honestly started to get really excited about Alpha Dutton going to get my Lunas‘ previous Alpha female. Maybe she’s my mate. I would love to be mated to an Alpha. And, since I would never disrespect my mate by marking her in public, she won’t have to be concerned about that.

I’ve seen my Alpha with his mates. The difference in their relationship and the relationship with all of the Alphas who marked their mates privately is obvious in every interaction they have. Unlike mates of old, my Alphas, and the others in our alliance, have mates who love to outwardly show affection to their mates. They aren’t afraid to touch or kiss in public. It doesn’t bring back horrible memories like what Alpha Amelia has. Even Luna Kinsley has been able to work through her public claiming but she’s not as outwardly affectionate with Alpha Lucas as the other Lunas are. For me, I want the entire world to see

how much my mate loves and adores me. So, I never want to do anything that would make her worry that I’d be inappropriate with her in public.
