The person who had taken her was none other than Wisteria Huxley. She had come out of nowhere, apparently having followed them all the way from the office. When she discovered that Nova was being held against her will, she had called the police and stormed the room. Now his men were being held at the police station, waiting for him to bail them out. That was a minor inconvenience, easily solved with a few phone calls. What truly infuriated him was that Wisteria had taken Nova.
*What is that woman’s problem?* he thought. *Doesn’t she have anything better to do?*
It was late, too late to go storming the Huxley estate. He had no relationship with the family, and causing a scene would only create more problems for him. But he knew Wisteria had no real power in her family; she wouldn’t have taken Nova there. He decided to wait at Nova’s apartment, hoping she would eventually show up.
She wasn’t home. He kicked her door in frustration, then remembered he still had her phone. He couldn’t unlock it, but the screensaver came on—a photo of Nova at her university. She was smiling, her face tilted up to the sun. He leaned against the wall, his thoughts in a tangle.
The hallway was narrow and dark. The motion-sensor light flickered off, plunging him into darkness. He knew she probably wouldn’t be back tonight. She had likely already contacted Ramona. He should be planning his next move. Besides, Ramona wasn’t even in Havencrest City. Even if she flew back immediately, she had no grounds to stop the deal with Gallop Inc. As long as the contract was signed, Melinda wouldn't be angry with him, even if he had been a little sloppy.
But logic couldn’t quell the anger simmering in his chest. He had been so good to her. He knew she was Ramona’s person, yet he had still looked out for her, defended her, driven for hours to help her brother. Any other girl in her position would have thrown herself at him by now. Why wasn’t she even a little bit moved? He could see the attraction in her eyes. The more he thought about it, the angrier he became.
He smoked an entire pack of cigarettes, the butts littering the floor around him. In the dim glow of the last cigarette, he saw a figure approaching. The sensor light flickered on, and he saw it was her.
She seemed to know he would be there. She stopped a few feet away and just looked at him. For a moment, he had the urge to pin her against the wall and…
