45 Chapter 45 Mom Doesn’t Need Us

Blanche’s POV 1

The phone rang at just the right moment, and I felt grateful for the interruption.

I wasn’t sure what Demetrius wanted to say, but I could more or less guess what was on his mind.

We might be fellow disciples, but someone who always took my side for no reasonthere was no way he didn’t have other feelings for

  1. me.

Some things were just better left unspoken.

I glanced down at the screen; it was a call from the hospital director.

I didn’t pick up, though, because the designated driver had just arrived.

Demetrius, get in the car. Text me when you get home,I said.

Demetrius glanced at me, clearly wanting to say something, but he hesitated for a second and realized tonight just wasn’t the time. So he

swallowed his words.

All these years, Demetrius had never been able to forget that instant crush he had on me the very first time he saw me.

Demetrius got into the car and, from the back seat, said to me, Go home and get some rest.

I nodded. Yeah, you, too.”

Demetrius gave me a gentle smile. Okay.”

After watching the car drive away, I slowly headed back toward the Callum Mansion. Just then, someone gently came over and took my

arm to support me.

Amber?I was stunned, my eyes full of shock and disbelief as I looked at the newcomer.

Amber said, Your brother sent me.

My eyes grew red as I said, Thank you both.”

Quinton sent me over because he was also hoping to ask how you feel about Demetrius,Amber said.

I paused for a moment before answering, Amber, my divorce from Zain isn’t finalized yet, so I’m really not thinking about getting

married again right now.

Besides, I’m a divorced woman. Who would want someone like me? I just want to focus on my work for now. Once I get promoted and

the divorce is settled, then maybe I’ll think about other things.”

I had never said I’d never get married again, but for me, remarriage would only be possible if I had the freedom to leave whenever I

needed to.

Only then would I even dare to think about getting married again. Marriage couldn’t give me what I needed, but my career could.

Amber didn’t try to influence my decision. She just gave a gentle smile and said, You’ve really come a long way?

I lowered my eyes and replied, It’s all these years of disappointment that made me see things clearly

Amber just gave my shoulder a gentle pat and didn’t say anything else.

Once I got back to my room, I called my supervisor, Laird,

Blanche, there’s another assignment for you. You’ll be heading out to the town again tomorrow, Laird said.

I was taken aback. Why?

Laird replied, It’s from higher up. There’s nothing I can do about it.”

From higher up?I wondered. Realizing what was going on, I didn’t argue any further. Isn’t Zain the one behind all this?

I had already been sent to the town once recently, so logically, I shouldn’t have been assigned another trip so soon. But here I was, not

long after, getting sent out again.

Zain must be the one pulling the strings here,I wondered.

Knowing there was no point in saying anything more, I could only accept it. Got it.”

After hanging up, I sat on the edge of my bed for a long time, just staring blankly into space.

In the medical world, I was still stuck at the very bottom of the ladder.

Even if I went for a master’s or a PhD, it might open up a few more doors, but Zain could still decide whether I stayed or left with just a

word.

In this ruthless society, power was king.

Meanwhile, on the other end, Laird hung up the phone and turned to Drew, who was sitting across from him. Mr. Stewart, I’ve arranged

everything just like you asked.”

Drew finally took his feet off the desk. Good. As long as it’s all set.”

He stood up, straightened his coat, and said, Well, I’m off then.”

Back at the Callum Mansion, I sat blankly on the edge of my bed for a long time, until the sudden ring of my phone finally broke the

silence and made me stir.

I glanced at the screen; the caller ID showed it was Carry. The call genuinely took me by surprise.

It used to be me always calling Carry; I never expected my daughter to be the one reaching out first.

Even if I’d said I wouldn’t meddle in Carry’s life anymore, I was still her momof course, I had to pick up.

When I answered, Carry asked, Mom, what are you doing?

I replied curtly, Nothing much. Just getting ready for bed.”

Just then, someone pushed the bedroom door open from the hallway. 120-50

I glanced over and saw Camila wobbling in, carefully carrying a basin of water.

Aunt Blanche, are you on the phone? Am I bothering you?Camila asked.

Camila’s arms were shaking as she tried to balance the basin, so I quickly got up to take it from her, worried she might spill it. Camila, weren’t you supposed to be in bed? How come you’re in my room?

Camila dragged over a small stool, sat down, and looked up at me. Aunt Blanche, Mr. Jake said your feet were swollen. When my feet

used to get puffy, Mom would always soak them for me.

It made them feel so much better and didn’t hurt as much. I thought I could help you soak your feet too, so maybe you won’t hurt

anymore.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I said gratefully, Camila, you’re such a good girl. You even know how to care for me now.”

When I got up to take the basin, I had set my phone down on the bed.

Now, with Camila about to wash my feet, I was so moved I completely forgot I was still on the phone with Carry.

Camila bent over, gently picked up my foot, and placed it in the basin. Aunt Blanche, is the water too hot?

My eyes filled with tears, my voice choked with emotion. No, it’s okay.”

Camila giggled, Aunt Blanche, why are you crying?

Oh, it’s nothing. I just feel so lucky right now,I choked out.

If you like soaking your feet, I’ll bring you water and help you every time,Camila said earnestly.

Camila, you’re my little princess. How could I let you do servant work for me? Just this one time is enough to make me feel so moved,I

replied, my heart full.

If it makes you happy, I’ll do it. I just want to see you smile, Aunt Blanche,Camila said sweetly.

Meanwhile, on the other end, Carry clutched her phone tightly, overhearing every word between Blanche and Camila.

Carry called out a couple of times, but Blanche just kept ignoring her.

Frustrated, Carry hung up and then angrily tossed her phone far across the room.

Just then, Zain walked into the room and saw Carry looking upset. He frowned and asked, Carry, what’s wrong?

When Carry saw Zain, she burst into tears and threw herself into his arms. Dad, Mom sounds like she’s hurt. Can we go check on her,

please?

Am I really worried about Mom, or am I just mad that she’s being so nice to Camila?Carry couldn’t even tell herself. I’m her daughter.

Why does Camila get all the praise from Mom?

Hearing what Carry said, Zain couldn’t help but remember what had happened earlier that day.

He knew Blanche was hurt, but he didn’t want to go see her.

Zain crouched down, wiped the tears from Carry’s eyes with his thumb, and said, Mom really doesn’t need us to look after her

Carry fell silent for a moment. She thought, Yeah, that’s true. Right now, that chubby Camila is probably trying her best to please Mom

and win her favor.

Carry didn’t want to go over there and see that brat.

Seeing that Carry had finally calmed down, Zain gave her a hug and said, Go wash up and get some sleep. I’ll be here with you.”

Carry answered with a tearful voice, Okay.

Even though she told herself not to go, Carry still felt anxious inside.
