46 Chapter 46 The Enemy’s Embrace

Blanche’s POV 1

Ten days after arriving in town, I bumped into Demetrius one evening.

The air felt crisp, and while the latesummer heat still scorched during the day, the evenings brought sweet relief.

Strolling along the stream that curved through town was exactly what I needed to decompress.

The water babbled softly, and I observed ducks drifting past while kids splashed in the shallow areas.

On the river steps, people square danced to booming music, their laughter and conversations floating through the air.

All the sounds blended together, forming the town’s most vibrant atmosphere.

Scarlet clouds stretched across the skyline, staining half the heavens red. The final beams of the dying sun struck the trees, scattering

golden light everywhere.

Among the cheers of children playing in the water, I spotted Demetrius, dressed casually.

He had on a clean white shirt, pale blue jeans, and white sneakers.

Standing in the bustling crowd, his gaze seemed to cut through everyone, settling directly on me.

Our eyes locked, and I felt completely stunned.

It wasn’t until Demetrius approached that I finally grasped he was truly herethis wasn’t some fantasy.

Demetrius waved his hand before my face. What’s got you so spaced out?

My eyes grew misty as I questioned, What brings you here?

Demetrius shifted slightly, facing the dying sun. Just needed to think.”

I knew he hadn’t come just for relaxation. I pressed, Have you eaten anything?

Demetrius didn’t respond. Instead, he softly grasped my arm and said, There’s somewhere I want to take you.

Before I could consent, Demetrius had already clasped my hand and was guiding me away from the crowd.

The spot Demetrius mentioned was a meadow just beyond town. In September, the scent of maturing plants hung in the air, everything

glowed vibrant green, and the atmosphere was pure and crisp.

After the sun disappeared, the moon floated peacefully in the dark sky.

Sitting at the meadow’s edge, we let the evening wind sweep over us. The night was serene and gorgeous, with stars scattered across

the heavens above.

I turned to Demetrius. Demetrius, when will you return to Oakwood?

I won’t be going back,he answered. I’ll stay here and work alongside you.”

I dropped my gaze, my voice thick with remorse. Why put yourself through all this trouble for me?

Demetrius shrugged, acting nonchalant. Consider it an early retirement.”

I understood his circumstances perfectly. After a pause, I suddenly said, I’ll ask Quinton if he can assist with your situation.

Demetrius faced me, looking directly into my eyes. He said earnestly, Blanche, I told youthey’ll come crawling back, begging me to

return.

I still couldn’t understand his certainty. I couldn’t help but fret. But what if they refuse?

In Oakwood, Zain’s power eclipsed everyone else’s.

Demetrius remained composed. They will. Believe me.”

I wanted to continue, but Demetrius interrupted. Blanche, how about staying with me and stargazing for a bit? Once we’re back in

Oakwood, we won’t have scenery like this anymore.”

With Demetrius making such a plea, I couldn’t bring myself to argue further.

I lifted my face toward the sky, my heart burdened with concerns.

After all, Demetrius’s troubles had begun because of me, and I still wanted to help him resolve this problem.

He’d fought so hard to reach his position, and if it was all destroyed just because of Zain’s single word, it truly wouldn’t be fair.

When I returned to the hospital’s temporary dormitory, it was already ten at night.

After finishing my washup routine, I collapsed onto the narrow bed and browsed some videos on my phone.

But with everything troubling my mind, I simply couldn’t unwind.

After mulling it over, I realized there was only one solution to Demetrius’s predicamentI’d have to plead with Zain for assistance.

But why should I?I thought. Neither Demetrius nor I committed any wrongdoing!

Since that wasn’t really viable, I began considering another approach.

If pleading with Zain is impossible, maybe I could approach his greatest enemy instead, I pondered.

In a metropolis like Oakwood, Vincent Aaray was the sole person who could assist. But if I approached Vincent, it might create even

more complications.

After weighing it thoroughly, I decided that asking Vincent seemed more promising.

Sitting up in bed, I called his number. To my amazement, Vincent answered almost instantly.

Hey, baby. Missing me?Vincent’s playful voice came through the line. His languid drawl mixed with his deep tone, and behind him, loud music pounded.

Everyone knew Vincent was infamous for his carefree attitude. Word was that women swarmed around him, and he switched girlfriends

like he switched outfits.

He always performed deep devotion for any woman he encountered. His eyes gazed at every woman as though he were smitten with

her.

He’d even persistently flirted with me, once boldly declaring that if I didn’t wed Zain, he’d marry me instead.

But I never took such jokes seriously. I never believed a word Vincent uttered.

I was already accustomed to Vincent’s relaxed manner, so I cut to the chase, my tone grave. I need to speak with you.”

The music on Vincent’s side quieted significantly. He teased, So, you finally realized? Figured out I’m the one who’ll cherish you?

I said, Vincent, I’ve always considered you a friend.

Regardless of what drama existed between Zain and Vincent, I had never gotten involved in their conflict. I’d never forgotten how

Vincent had aided me before.

And it wasn’t just oncehe’d helped me multiple times.

Vincent sighed, his voice as smooth as silk through the phone. So, you need me to handle something for you?

I was startled. HHow did you figure that out?

I hadn’t even spoken, and Vincent had already deduced my intention.

Vincent chuckled, and for once, his tone became earnest. I can assist you, but I want nothingexcept you.

For once, his tone was genuine.

I’d heard Vincent make similar statements before. But I simply couldn’t agree to it.

Let’s just forget I ever called,” I said.

I knew Vincent never lacked female companions. What he truly desired was probably the fact that I was Zain’s wife.

Just as I was about to disconnect, Vincent suddenly said, You know, just give the word and I’ll do whatever you need.”

I paused for a moment, then asked, Even if it means making Zain your enemy?

Vincent sounded completely untroubled. What’s to fear? We’ve always been adversaries anyway.

I replied coldly, No thanks. I doubt you’d actually confront him.

Vincent’s laughter grew louder, Nice attempt, but that won’t manipulate me.”

I gave a slight smile. Fine then, I’m disconnecting

Just then, Vincent said, How about we meet?

I replied, I’m not available today. Perhaps another time.”

Vincent said, I’m in town.”

I was puzzled. What?

Vincent patiently clarified, I mean, I’m in the same town as you.”

Thesitated briefly, then finally consented. Alright.

If I want to help Demetrius, this is my only option, I thought to myself.

I changed into a longsleeved top and trousers before leaving the hospital dormitory.

The moment I stepped outside, I noticed a glossy black luxury vehicle parked at the curb.

Vincent was lounging casually against the car, playing with his expensive timepiece. He stood there in the darkness, merging with the

small town’s shadows.

I approached and quietly called out, Hello, Mr. Aarav.

At the sound of my voice, Vincent glanced up and examined me from top to bottom, then opened his arms wide and walked toward me.

Before I could respond, he seized me and drew me tightly into his embrace.

It’s been ages. Missed me?Vincent said, his chin settling on top of my head, a broad smile on his face.

Not far away, a man dressed in black was hiding in the shadows, recording everything on his phone.

When he finished, he quietly transmitted the video to Drew.
