49 Chapter 49 How Could You Not Know

Blanche’s POV 1

I noticed Zain’s tone had softened, so I let some of the edge drop from my voice. Why don’t you come by tomorrow? I want to talk to you about something.

Whatever it is, you can say it over the phone,” I replied, leaning back against the headboard. I didn’t want to see Zain’s face, and I sure as hell didn’t want him seeing mine.

We only met when we absolutely had to. He didn’t give a damn about me, and I had zero intention of sticking around.

Zain suddenly brought up, It’s about Carry.”

My tone stayed flat. Zain, I’ve already told you. I’m done getting involved in Carry’s life. Unless it’s something major, you don’t need to fill me in. Just handle her decisions yourself.

Zain had mentioned Carry because he figured I couldn’t really stop caring about my daughter, but honestly, I just didn’t seem to give a

shit anymore.

Blanche, you-He sounded lost, like he couldn’t find the words.

I added, Even if it’s something important, we’ll have to wait until I get back.

Get back?I could practically hear him thinking, caught off guard.

Zain caught onto something and quickly pressed, Where are you? I’ll come pick you up.”

First time he’d ever offered to pick me up.

I was stunned for a second, then let out a bitter laugh. Zain, are you seriously asking me where I am?

Yeah,Zain said.

My laugh turned even more bitter. You of all people should know where I am. Why are you even asking?

My anger was starting to bubble up.

Zain sounded confused. What do you mean?

I exploded at him, Zain, quit playing innocent. The way this whole thing went downthat’s all on you. I don’t want to see you, and unless

it’s something major, don’t call me again.

I cut him off and slammed the phone down.

Zain’s POV

I stared at the dead line, feeling a surge of anger I couldn’t quite place.

The screen went black, and I slammed the phone onto my desk with a sharp crack. The study door opened from the hallway.

Joanna walked in. She was about to speak, but I cut her off before she could get a word out. Get out.”

I’d assumed it was just the maid, so I didn’t bother with politeness.

Joanna caught my mistake and didn’t leave.

Instead, she moved up behind me and asked softly, Zain, what’s wrong?

I glanced at her before answering, Nothing.

I wasn’t in the mood to talk, so Joanna didn’t push.

She set the cup she was carrying on my desk. Zain, I made you some Beck Mary. Try it.”

I said quietly, Thanks.

Joanna said, I’ll leave you alone then.

I nodded. Okay.”

Joanna headed for the door, but after a few steps, I suddenly turned and called out, Joanna?

Yeah?Joanna turned back, her eyes bright with unshed tears.

I walked over and smiled at her. Thanks for everything lately.

Joanna shook her head. It’s nothing.

I said, Just let me know if you want to go somewhere. I’ll take you.”

Joanna smiled. Let me think about it. I’ll tell you when I decide.

I said, Okay, make sure you get some rest. Don’t stay up too late.”

Joanna nodded. Okay.”

I stood in the study a bit longer, but soon heard Carry’s voice behind me. Daddy?

Why aren’t you asleep?I turned to see Carry in the doorway, wearing a little dress with her hair loose.

Carry walked in, clutching her dinosaur pillow. I thought I heard you yelling at Miss Joanna.”

I chuckled and gently touched her cheek. No way, you must’ve heard wrong.

Carry still looked worried. Did Mommy make you mad?

My expression hardened. Carry, don’t overthink it. She can’t really make me mad.

Carry dropped her head, looking miserable. But Daddy, it’s been forever since I saw Mommy.”

I hugged her, feeling a sharp pain for her. Do you miss her?

Carry shook her head. I don’t know.

I could tell she was confused and missing her mom, so I gently promised, I’ll try to talk to Mommy soon.”

Carry nodded and headed back to her room, glancing back at me with every few steps, reluctant to go.

Joanna was really sweet, and Daddy was too, but Carry wished her mom would be nice to her as well.

The next day, I got Blanche’s work address from Desmond. After wrapping up at the office, I drove to the hospital, planning to wait for

Blanche’s shift to end and talk to her in my car.

I waited for ages, even past shift change, but Blanche never appeared. So I drove to the Callum Mansion, hoping to catch her there.

I waited until evening, but still no Blanche. I tried calling, but no one picked up.

My patience finally snapped, so I walked straight into the Callum Mansion.

Isabela tried to stop me, but seeing I was someone important, she stepped aside without a word. When I reached the entrance hall,

Camila finally spotted me..

You. How did you get in here? Get out. We don’t want heartless people like you around,Camila said coldly.

She despised me, so she didn’t bother with manners and told me to leave immediately.

Quinton heard Camila’s shouting and came out to investigate. The moment he saw me, his smile disappeared instantlyhe didn’t even

fake pleasantries and just snapped, Get out.”

My expression turned stone cold, ignoring their hostility. I cut straight to the point. Where’s Blanche? I need to see her.

Camila was livid. You’ve got some nerve asking about Aunt Blanche? You drove her away, and now you have the balls to show up here?

Get out. We don’t want you here.”

The commotion downstairs caught Amber’s attention, and she rushed down from the second floor.

When she saw me, her face went cold as she hurried over and scolded Camila sharply, Camila, that’s not how you speak to people.

Then she turned to Quinton. Quinton, take Camila upstairs. I’ll handle Mr. Jacob myself.

Quinton had a quick temper, and if I stayed much longer, the two might end up throwing punches.

Amber wasn’t taking that risk, so she said to me, Mr. Jacob, let’s talk outside.

For once, I actually agreed. Okay

Once we were outside, Amber said, Mr. Jacob, if you’re looking for Blanche, she’s not here. You should leave.

I frowned. So where is she?

Amber looked at me, genuinely puzzled. You mean you really don’t know where Blanche is?

I gave a dry, almost mocking laugh. Just because she’s my wife doesn’t mean I always know where she is.”

Seeing I was serious, Amber said, But she’s your wife. How could you not know where she went?

I said, To her, I’m probably not even her husband anymore.”

Amber shot back, You shattered her heart, and you still have the nerve to say something like that?

I fixed Amber with an icy stare. Talking won’t fix anything. Just tell me where she is.”

Amber wasn’t sure what game I was playing. When Blanche left, she’d mentioned that I had told the hospital to transfer her out of

Oakwood.

But right now, I genuinely looked clueless, and the way I’d barged in didn’t exactly signal good intentions.

So Amber kept Blanche’s location to herself. If you don’t know where she is, how could you expect us to know?

I pinned Amber with a sharp, predatory stare, trying to pressure her into slipping up.

But Amber didn’t flinch; she stayed cool as ice, not showing a hint of nerves.

I let out a slow breath, my tone low and menacing, Just don’t lie to me. You can’t handle what comes next.”

With that, I strode off, and even the wind that followed felt ice cold.
