Dante's voice was hoarse, sounding like crushed gravel. He tried to push himself up using his arms, but having just awoken from a deep coma, his muscles betrayed him. His arms gave out, and he slumped back into the cushions.
"Dante!"
"Are you awake?"
A familiar voice rang in the older man's ears. Dante's expression froze, and his heart hammered against his ribs in uncontrollable panic.
He turned his head in disbelief.
His vision was blurry. He blinked hard, fighting to focus, until he finally made out the two figures standing side by side by his bed.
It was his grandson, Callahan, and his soon-to-be granddaughter-in-law, Leilani! The two people he thought he had lost forever.
They had lost weight, their skin was tanner, and their faces bore the heavy exhaustion of their relentless ordeal. But despite looking a little worse for wear, they were standing right in front of him. Breathing. Alive.
"You... you..."
Dante's pupils shrank, his breathing hitching wildly. His frail, trembling finger pointed at them, unable to form words.
After a long moment, a distorted look crossed his face. Remembering the agonizing betrayal and crushing grief he had endured these past weeks, seeing his grandson alive felt like a cruel trick of the mind.
For a second, he couldn't tell if this was reality or some near-death hallucination. The sheer shock was suffocating.
He stared at them with a broken heart, his voice quivering.
"How... how am I seeing you?"
"This isn't real, is it..."
"Am I... am I dead?"
