Suddenly, Dante grabbed a pillow with his free hand and weakly whacked Callahan over the shoulder, cursing through his tears.
"You ungrateful brat!"
"If you weren't dead, why didn't you send word?! Huh?!"
"Do you have any idea... do you know I was almost tortured to death by your ruthless uncle and his wife?!"
"You absolute bastard! You practically scared me to death!"
The pillow didn't hurt at all. It was just an old man's desperate, emotional release after surviving a nightmare.
He was so overjoyed to have his favorite grandson back that he couldn't bear to actually hurt him.
Dante cried and scolded like a child, a complete departure from his usual commanding, intimidating presence. But neither Callahan nor Leilani found it funny. Instead, it just broke their hearts.
The Langley family had been through hell in such a short time. The fact that the older man had held on this long was a miracle in itself.
Callahan kept his back straight, not dodging the weak blows. Even while being hit, the corners of his mouth couldn't stop turning up. His eyes reddened, and his voice was thick with apologetic sincerity.
"I know, I know. It's my fault. I didn't think it through, and I put you through hell."
"It won't happen again."
"You think there's going to be a next time?!"
Seeing Dante revving up for another round of yelling, Leilani quickly intervened. She handed him a warm cup of coffee, perfectly cutting off his rant.
Dante shot Callahan a childish glare, but obediently took a few sips of the comforting brew from Leilani's hand.
