Seeing his mother's attention slightly diverted, Callahan seized the opening.
"Mom, I honestly didn't realize it had gotten this bad. It was an oversight."
"It really just looks ugly. There's no muscle or nerve damage."
"When it was at its worst, Leilani was cleaning and changing my dressings every single day. If I hadn't lost my temper seeing Grandpa like that, it probably would have been fully closed in a few days."
"It better be!" Letty shot him a sarcastic, exhausted glare.
"Every time I say one thing, you have ten excuses ready. You always think you know best."
Despite her frustration, he was still her son. Worried that her scolding might distract the nurse, Letty clamped her mouth shut and watched in anxious silence.
After a few moments, the nurse secured a fresh bandage and spoke softly. "Mr. Langley, you're all set."
"The laceration was quite deep, and the force that tore the stitches was significant. Please try to minimize movement in this arm. You need the dressing changed daily, and keep your diet clean and simple to promote healing."
"Understood. Thank you," Callahan replied politely.
"I'll make sure he follows every word of that," Letty chimed in quickly.
The nurse packed up her tray and left the room.
As the door clicked shut, leaving the two of them alone, Letty finally let out a long, shuddering sigh.
She gently rested her fingers near the fresh bandages. "Callahan, I know you've always been independent. Since you were a kid, once you made up your mind, a freight train couldn't stop you."
