Payton had read her perfectly.
Knowing their enemy's twisted methods, the fact that the antidote was clean almost guaranteed it was the opening move of a much darker game. Leilani couldn't bring herself to administer it. What if it triggered a secondary reaction? What if she couldn't save him if things went south?
Payton saw the paralyzing fear in her eyes. Instead of panic, a deeply calm, almost liberated smile spread across his weathered face.
While Leilani was still desperately trying to figure out how to gently explain why they couldn't risk it, a large, calloused hand shot out.
Moving faster than she could react, Payton grabbed the vial of dark brown liquid right off the counter!
"Payton, no!"
Leilani's eyes went wide. She screamed, lunging forward to snatch it back.
But Payton swiftly pivoted, dodging her grasp. Without a second of hesitation, he threw his head back and downed the thick, viscous liquid in three massive gulps.
"Payton, what did you just do?!"
Leilani ripped the empty glass vial from his hands, her voice violently shaking with pure terror. "We don't even know what his angle is! How could you just drink it?! What if... what if..."
She couldn't even bring herself to say the words.
"Leilani."
"I was supposed to die in Northern Myanor twenty years ago. Paulina literally ripped me out of the grim reaper's hands."
