"Ethan?" she asked, her voice gentle and laced with surprise. "What are you doing here?"
Ethan skidded to a halt just two steps away from her, his chest heaving from the sprint. His eyes were glued to her, frantically scanning her from head to toe.
Aside from the pale complexion and the faint, exhausted shadows beneath her eyes, she was whole. No missing limbs. No bandages. She was standing right in front of him, entirely safe.
Seeing her perfectly intact finally allowed his battered heart to settle. A sudden, burning heat prickled at the corners of his eyes, and he had to blink rapidly to force the tears back.
He let out a long, shaky exhale, the corners of his mouth curving into an involuntary, overwhelmed smile.
"It really is you... you're okay... thank God."
His voice dropped, thick with the emotional aftermath of a nightmare. "I saw the news. I thought..."
He couldn't bring himself to say the word. He swallowed it down, just staring at her, his eyes brimming with the purest, most undisguised joy of getting someone back from the dead.
But then, his gaze shifted, landing on the silent, towering presence beside her.
The second he made eye contact with Callahan, the warmth evaporated from Ethan's face. His brows crashed together in a hard frown.
Relief gave way to a sudden, explosive surge of anger. He didn't know exactly why, but seeing Callahan standing there unscathed made his blood boil.
His tone hardened instantly, directing all his misplaced fear onto the billionaire.
"Mr. Langley!" he snapped. "The whole world thinks you two died in a warzone, and now you just casually stroll out of a police station? What the hell is going on here?"
