Callahan cut him off before Fitch could even formulate another lie, reading him like an open book.
"I suggest you drop the act, Fitch."
"Because frankly... I already know who's been pulling your strings."
Callahan's lips curled into a cold, predatory smile. "A coward who hides behind a mask, right?"
Fitch's stomach plummeted. It felt as though an invisible hand had just crushed his lungs, but his decades of survival instinct kicked in, plastering a look of righteous confusion onto his face.
"Pulling my strings? What on earth are you talking about?" Fitch scoffed, attempting to sound deeply offended. "I've built an empire with my bare hands. You think a man like me takes orders from anyone?"
"I don't know what kind of spy thriller you're living in, but I don't follow."
"Would you like me to fill in the blanks?" Callahan leaned closer, the physical distance between them evaporating into pure intimidation. "The offshore accounts you used to bleed those funds dry. After slicing through layers of shell companies, the money landed in a ghost corporation registered in the Cayman Islands."
"The actual beneficiary of that company is a phantom. The paper trail vanishes into thin air right there."
Callahan's eyes were practically glowing with dangerous intent. "Furthermore... we have flight logs. The day before the hit in Northern Myanor, a private jet took off from an extremely sensitive, off-the-grid location and landed right here in the city. The flight plans were scrubbed, full of contradictions. But upon closer inspection, the arrival time and coordinates sync perfectly with your schedule that week."
He watched the telltale twitch in Fitch's eye. "So I'll ask you again. Who is the masked man you met with? And where is he now?"
