He stepped inside. The room was suspiciously spotless. Half the closet was empty, and the expensive skincare and jewelry that usually littered the vanity were completely gone. It was obvious she had packed up in a hurry and had no intention of coming back.
His stomach dropped. He pulled out his phone and dialed her number.
"The number you have dialed is powered off," the automated voice coldly informed him.
She was gone.
At a critical moment like this, her disappearance was as good as a confession. The second Fitch was arrested, she had vanished into thin air, risking a hasty escape even while heavily pregnant.
If she wasn't guilty, why run?
Standing in the hollow silence of the estate's living room, Milford's sense of impending doom deepened. This wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision. The Sloans were utterly ruined. How could a defenseless pregnant woman pull off a disappearing act on her own? Someone had to be bankrolling her escape.
Given her track record, Milford knew she wasn't the harmless victim she played. His father's downfall was absolutely tied to her.
Forcing himself to focus, he moved down the hall to check the other rooms.
Fitch's study was perfectly tidy. No signs of a search. He tapped the computer keyboard, waking the screen, but it demanded a password. He tried a few obvious combinations, but the screen flashed red with an error message every time.
