Ethan hadn't expected her to agree so easily. A flash of delight crossed his face, and he quickly sealed the plan, as if worried she might change her mind. "It's a date, then. I'll pick you up the day after tomorrow."
Leilani smiled. "Okay."
She turned and walked toward her building, completely unaware that a black Maybach was parked silently in the shadows of a nearby tree, its occupant watching their cheerful exchange, their easy laughter creating a world only they seemed to understand.
The car window was halfway down, revealing Callahan's chiseled profile cloaked in darkness. He watched, motionless, as Leilani smiled and waved goodbye to Ethan.
Callahan's knuckles turned white as he gripped the steering wheel, their conversation replaying in his mind and stirring an unsettling feeling deep in his gut.
All Souls' Day? A memorial visit? Since when were Leilani and that man close enough to visit his family's graves together?
Leilani was his girlfriend. She hadn't even visited his own father's grave, and now she was going to visit that man's mother and grandmother?
A burning sensation seared through his chest, a bitter mix of jealousy and anger that threatened to overwhelm his reason. He wanted to get out of the car right then and there to confront her, but he remembered how strained things had been between them lately. With Ethan lurking like a vulture, causing another scene might be the final push that drove Leilani away for good.
After a moment of deliberation, Callahan forced himself to swallow his anger. He would wait, investigate, and then settle this score with Leilani. He slammed his foot on the accelerator, and the car sped away, melting silently into the deepening twilight.
