"Good heavens, Winifred! Where on earth did you find this gem?" Mrs. Chilton gasped, her eyes glued to Clive.
Mrs. Watson paused with her wine glass halfway to her lips, a look of pure astonishment in her eyes. "He's a lot more exciting than that little model from last time."
Clive stood under the lights, offering a slight nod and a perfectly calibrated smile. His naturally seductive eyes swept across the room, a lazy, flirtatious spark in their depths. It was as if he had stepped out of some dark fairytale, able to charm anyone with a single glance.
Winifred watched her friends' entranced reactions with satisfaction. She affectionately took Clive's arm and gave one of his fox ears a playful pinch. "Well? Does my Clive meet with everyone's approval?"
"Approval? He's magnificent!" Mrs. Chilton hurried over, getting so close she was practically pressed against him. "These ears are so realistic! They're so soft…" She reached out to touch one, and while Clive tilted his head slightly, he didn't pull away. He simply chuckled, his voice a low, magnetic purr. "Do you like them, Mrs. Chilton?"
The sound of her name, spoken in that deep, husky tone, made Mrs. Chilton blush. She playfully tapped his arm. "You little fox, you really know how to charm a girl!"
Mrs. Watson couldn't stay seated either. She stood and offered him a glass of wine. "What's the fun in just standing there? Come have a drink with me."
Clive followed her to the sofa and took the glass, his fingertips 'accidentally' brushing against her wrist as he tilted his head back and drained it in one go. The movement of his throat caused a collective, sharp intake of breath from the women around him.
Winifred reached out to straighten one of his crooked fox ears, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Keep them happy tonight, and forget the yacht… if you want to make a comeback, it's just a matter of them saying the word."
Clive didn't respond, his gaze fixed on the dark night sky. Sensing his unhappiness, Winifred figured she might have been pushing him too hard lately, especially making him come here when he wasn't feeling well. A man with Clive's assets was a rare find. She leaned in closer, her red lips almost touching his ear. "Of course, I'm still the one who cares for you most… Clive, that company I promised to set up for you? It's almost finalized."
Her fingertips slipped into his suit pocket, leaving a room key card behind. "Come to my room after the party ends. The keys to your yacht will be waiting."
At the mention of the company, the tension in Clive's face eased slightly, and a smile returned to his lips. "I understand. Thank you, Winifred."
