It was a long time before Callahan finally let her go.
Leilani rested in his arms, her breathing slowly returning to normal, when she suddenly remembered something. "It's getting late, I should head back."
Yvonne was still at home waiting for her.
Callahan, who had been idly playing with her fingers, was instantly reluctant to let go. "Why are you leaving so soon? Can't you stay a little longer?"
"It's not early at all," Leilani said, glancing up at the clock. In another half hour, her birthday would be over.
Callahan narrowed his eyes. "You don't seem very sad to leave."
Leilani chuckled. "We live one floor apart. Besides, can't we see each other tomorrow?"
But that wasn't the same. Today was her birthday, the day she had accepted his proposal. They hadn't even had a chance to properly enjoy the moment, and she was already leaving. Callahan tightened his arms around her waist, unwilling to part. "Why don't you stay the night? Let her sleep downstairs by herself."
It wasn't like this would be the first time Leilani had stayed over.
"No!"
She had left in such a hurry without explaining anything to Yvonne. If she didn't go back tonight, Yvonne would worry.
Callahan stubbornly refused to let go. Leilani pinched his arm. "Callahan!"
"Alright, alright," Callahan surrendered, holding up his hands. He stood up, pulling her with him.
"I'll walk you back. However," he leaned in and whispered in her ear, "once the Sherwood business is settled, you're moving in with me."
A blush crept up Leilani's ears. She neither agreed nor refused, simply giving him a gentle push. "Let's go."
Leilani bent down to change her shoes, a faint smile still lingering on her lips. "I am. Why are you still awake?"
Yvonne stared at the slight upward curve of her mouth, her mind racing. She was pretty sure she'd heard Mr. Langley's voice at the door. When did those two meet up? She remembered Leilani saying she was just going to pick up a package. How did picking up a package turn into her disappearing?
And more than that, Leilani had been looking so down when she left, but now she was clearly much happier.
Though puzzled, Yvonne was happy for her friend. "It's your birthday, Leilani. How could I go to sleep before you came home?"
Having lived with Leilani for a while, Yvonne knew that her friend's life wasn't always safe. After the last kidnapping incident, she always made a point to wait up until Leilani was home.
Leilani knew about this habit, which was why she had decided against staying at Callahan's.
"But... Leilani," Yvonne tilted her head, studying her, "I remember you looked so glum when you left. How did picking up a package make you so happy? Who sent it to you?"
