Though no one had lived there in ages, there wasn't a speck of dust on the furniture or the floors. It was obvious someone had been coming by regularly to maintain the place.

"I've kept a cleaning service on retainer for this unit. We can just unpack and settle right in."

As she spoke, Gloria pushed open the door to the south-facing bedroom. "Milford, you take this one. The natural light is great, it's quiet, and it's perfect for you to rest."

Yvonne had never been to this apartment before. She spun around, taking in her surroundings with wide-eyed excitement.

"Wow, Grandma and Grandpa bought you such a gorgeous place! Why have you never brought us here before?"

Gloria rubbed her nose, looking slightly guilty. "Because this has always been my secret base."

"Whenever your dad and I got into a massive fight, or when things got too overwhelming and I just needed to be alone, I'd come stay here for a while."

"I didn't want anyone bothering me, so I kept it to myself."

Who would have thought that, at her age, she'd actually be going through with a divorce and moving in permanently?

Thankfully, even when she hadn't visited for long stretches, she had kept up with the cleaning service.

If she hadn't, scrubbing this place from top to bottom would have absolutely destroyed them.

They spent the next few hours in a flurry of activity.

Gloria unpacked in the bedrooms, carefully hanging clothes in the closets, while Yvonne organized the smaller, miscellaneous items.

Milford had been strictly ordered to stay on the sofa and rest. As he sat there, watching his mother and sister bustle back and forth, a strange sensation washed over him.

It was hard to put into words...

He felt happy, yet it all seemed slightly surreal.

This apartment didn't have the sprawling, extravagant square footage of the Sherwood estate. There was no cold, imported marble or blinding crystal chandeliers. And yet, for the first time in a very long time, he felt a profound sense of peace.
