Payton sagged against the metal rack. Given his frail health, being strung up by his wrists was sheer agony.
He panted heavily, looking over at Leilani. "Don't panic, kid. These cowards are just trying to get under your skin by stringing us up."
"Whatever they say next, keep your head. If things go south, just worry about saving yourself."
Callahan offered a sharp, silent nod of agreement from across the room. The look in his eyes made it clear he backed Payton's words completely.
Leilani's gaze drifted from the gasping older man to the fresh blood steadily dripping from Callahan's arm.
She took a slow, deep breath, burying her terror and rage deep down. When she looked up, her eyes were like steel.
"I know."
"We made a promise. We came in together, we leave together. Nobody gets left behind."
"I know exactly what I'm doing."
There was absolutely no way she was leaving them to die.
As she spoke, her fingers subtly twisted behind her back, searching blindly.
Suddenly, the old, dust-caked speaker mounted in the corner of the ceiling crackled to life, the synthesized voice returning.
"What a beautiful, touching display. I almost shed a tear."
"Dr. Sloan, look at the two men chained up before you. One is the man you are deeply in love with..."
"The other is the only living blood relative of the mentor who practically raised you."
"I am so very curious... if both of their lives are on the line, who will you choose?"
The mastermind paused, clearly savoring the way the color drained from Leilani's face, before drawling on.
"The rules of this round are quite simple."
