Chapter 31

~Valeria~

“Are you sure?” Tobias asks.

“Yes! I’m certain I’d know if someone tried to murder me

again!”

Tobias puts a hand up. “Okay, okay. She’s on her way, and we’ll ask her.”

I wasn’t taking any chances. The first person to pop into my head who would try to kill me is the very one who already tried once and almost succeeded-Roseana, Tobias’s mate.

Roseana arrives with four guards behind her. When her eyes fall on me, she lifts her nose and looks away as if I weren’t worth looking at.

“My love, I need to ask you something.” Tobias takes her

hand. “Did you by any chance try to-or order-Valeria to be harmed?”

“No. Of course not!”

“I did not! What reason would I have to harm her now?”

Tobias sighs, almost relieved. She does sound convincing.

I get up. “Fine, but I don’t trust you. Any of you. You tried to kill me once, so it’s not far-fetched you could do it again.”

I don’t know how I get the balls to speak to royalty like this, but I’m doing it—and they’re taking it.

“Well, I didn’t… this time,” she mutters.

I begin to leave, but Tobias tries to stop me. “Valeria, wait, let me give you some guards for your protection.”

“No. I’ll be fine.” I storm out.

I’m angry, though I can’t be certain it was her. The woman may be unhinged, but she was right-there’s no motive now that Tobias is no longer courting me.

Back in my room, I lock the door and check every corner, making sure I’m alone. I’m startled when two men arrive, sent by Tobias. They explain they’re here to fix my window. Once they finish and leave, I search the room again for any hidden intruders, and again find none. Only then do I allow myself to rest. Sleep takes time to come, but once it does, it holds me through the night without interruption.

“Hello?”

“Hey, love.”

“Raphael?”

“You know it. How’s my girl?”

“Uh! Fine.” I don’t hide my frustration.

“Give me a second.” He sounds far away, and I hear clicking, as if he’s texting someone. After a few minutes, there’s a knock on my door.

“Open it,” Raphael says.

When the door opens, two guards stand there. They bow. “Lady Valeria, we’ve been placed here for your protection.”

“Really? I already refused Tobias’s guards.”

“Tobias? He knows?” Raphael’s voice quickly turns low.

“Yeah. He’s the first one I went to when it happened.”

“Him? Why?” I can hear the anger in his tone.

“Because his mate tried to kill me once, so I was making sure it wasn’t her again.”

“I see. And?”

I sigh. “I don’t think it was her.” My eyes narrow, drifting toward the bathroom door. “Wait a minute. It could’ve easily been my own family.”

“AH! What the hell is wrong with you?!”

I furiously walk up to her. She scurries back, sliding down the other side of the bed, using the blanket as a shield.

“Did you try to kill me yesterday?!” I point my finger at her, yelling.

“What?!”

“No!”

“Liar! You tried to drown me!”

“I did not! But maybe I should! Seems someone has the right

idea!”

“What’s going on?” Mother walks in.

“She’s gone crazy, Mom!” Jade scurries to her and hides behind her back.

“It was you,” I say.

She doesn’t speak. Just stares at me with so much anger her body begins to shake.

“Why? WHY?!” I shout. “Why can’t you just let me be?!”

“What do you mean?” Jade shouts, confused.

“It was her! She tried to kill me!” I point at Mother.

“You took the box!” Mother shouts. “It was you! You evil

creature!”

I pause, stunned. “What… is it? What’s that box?”

“You were a mistake, Valeria!” she screams. “I should’ve killed you when you were in my womb!”

Now even Jade looks afraid of her. Mother looks manic.

I glance at Jade. “Your mother’s crazy,” I tell her. “She tried to drown me yesterday in the tub. Not that you’d mind, but I’m warning you both-this is my last warning. You try to hurt me again, and I’ll come for you. I have nothing to lose.”

“Leave!” Mother shouts.

“Don’t ever touch me again!” I shout back.

“LEAVE!”

I slam the door behind me, storm into my room, and slam my own door in anger. I pace furiously until I finally calm down.

“Valeria!” Raphael’s voice echoes faintly, and I remember he’s still on the phone.

“Yeah?” I ask.

“What happened?!”

“It was my mother.”

“But… why? After all she’s done to you.”

A quiet breath escapes him. “Okay. But she won’t get near you again. You have guards now. They’ll go with you everywhere.”

“Valeria, please. For now.”

He laughs.

I don’t want him to stop. I like it, and I miss him-but I’m not telling him that.

I interrupt. “I heard the King is discussing mandatory training for people sixteen to thirty-five?”

“How do you know that?”

“So it’s true.”

He lets out a long breath. “We’re losing people and…” He doesn’t finish.

“Raphael?”

“We’ve been betrayed.”

“What?!”

“One of our packs defected to the enemy.”

“WHAT?!”

“We lost a whole pack, and with our people dying, we’re running thin on men.”

“I see. And my father?”

“He’s fine. Was leading the pack till I arrived.”

“But as I said before, this doesn’t mean anything,” I tell him.

“Who the hell are you trying to convince, because it’s not me.”

I roll my eyes.

He suddenly speaks to someone. “Yeah… alright. I have to go, Valeria. Save my number.”

“Okay.”

“I’ll call you soon, but also, you call me too if something else happens. Okay?”

“Yes. I will.”

Good girl.” He hangs up before I can tell him to stop.

A knock interrupts my conversation with my dog.

It’s Nolan. “Lady Valeria, the King has called for a meeting. Everyone must attend.”

Is this it?

I leave the room, the guards trailing close behind, and merge into the crowd. Together we move toward the ballroom, where we stand in hushed anticipation, waiting for the King’s arrival.

Mother and Jade are already here. Around us, whispers ripple through the gathering-questions, speculation, fragments of rumor. No one knows why we’ve been summoned, but everyone feels the weight of it.

“What do you think is going on?” Grimm stands next to me. Jade’s eyes are immediately on us.

“We’re joining the fight,” I tell him.

“You’re still on that?”

“Hell yeah. Do you want to bet?”

He laughs. “Sure.”

Grimm looks at me with his mouth open.

I smirk. “You owe me.”

He squints. “You knew.”

“I did not. I’m just psychic like that.’

“Yeah, yeah. What’s with the guards?” He points at the ones. behind me.

“Oh… uhm… someone tried to hurt me.”

“Again? Geez. You must be someone’s hobby.”

“Yeah, that’s a good way of putting it.”

When the meeting ends, I retreat to my room. The door stays locked as I spend the day and night in solitude, waiting for morning.

Prince Antonio and Stephan arrive. They’re our instructors and lead us to the training grounds through the woods. When we arrive, all the seasoned trainees wait for us.

“You won’t just be learning from us, but also from those who’ve been here longer than you,” Antonio says. “We won’t be going hard on you today. Just normal, simple exercise.”

“Wait, together?” a guy asks. “Wolfless and true werewolves?” He looks at us wolfless with disgust.

“Yes, together. You’ll need to leave that crap out of training. The enemy doesn’t discriminate.”

Needless to say, the true werewolves aren’t happy about any of

this.

Stephan and Antonio have us running for hours, until my legs feel like they’re about to pop out of their sockets. Just when I think we’re done, they tell us to climb a tree. Sounds simple18:38

He lets out a small laugh.

We’re finally done for the day, but no one has the strength to get up and leave. Grimm’s glare cuts through the clearing, sharp as ever. I follow his eyes and spot Jade—she’s staring back at him with those wide, pleading puppy eyes.

“Do you see yourself ever giving her a chance?” I ask.

“Never. She only wants me now because no one wants her.”

True.

When people finally begin to leave, I’m called by Stephan. “You did well today.”

“I did not. Were you not watching?”

He lets out a warm laugh. “I was. Everyone was having a hard time, but I could see you were one of the few who actually wanted to get to the top of the tree. Many had already given up Before even starting.”

“Yeah… would that be a problem?” His smile is killer, and suddenly I’m caught between intrigue and guilt.
