< Chapter 35-1
This is absurd. The gathering is meant to honor Emmet, yet all they do is chatter about things they barely understand.
I spot Raphael in the room. He and his brothers sit on their thrones, their expressions distant. Then the King finally arrives, a woman in black draped against his arm. Her veil hides her face, but I’m certain she must be Emmet’s mother—one of the King’s mistresses.
He steps before his throne and straightens, stretching himself taller. “My son has been killed. My. Son. And all I hear are whispers of a growing shadow. All I hear are the tales of a dead King. The Raven Wolf King is not back. It is impossible! And if all had brains, you’d know that! I want the truth! Not fairy tale stories! Mark my words, I will find the people responsible
for this!”
you
He flips his cape and sits, carefully watching everyone around him as he helps his mistress sit beside him.
“He’s angry,” Stephan says, stepping next to me.
“He lost his son. Completely justifiable, especially when people tell these outrageous stories.”
Stephan’s eyes land on me. “You don’t believe in the Raven Wolf King?”

expression soft. “You’re a good woman.”
It makes me blush. “Uhm… I’m sorry for your loss. Emmet was your cousin, right?”
“Oh, yeah. Can I ask you a question?”
I don’t think he cares about any of this, and maybe they weren’t close at all.
“Of course,” I respond.
He looks at Raphael, who is now staring at us. “It’s obvious Raphael cares about you, but are you two courting?”
I don’t know what to say, but we’re not really courting. “Uhm…
no.”
“Then why do you hesitate when I try to make my moves?”
He’s being direct!
“Uhm… it’s just… it’s too soon. I don’t know you that well.”
“I see. Then I’ll have to change that.”
The intense stare he gives me makes me shiver.

“Valeria.” Raphael is on us, his face void of all emotion except for one: anger. He takes my hand. “Would you accompany me outside?”
“Yes.” I let Raphael guide me outside, leaving Stephan behind, and wave at him without meeting his eyes.
“He’s got his eye on you, that fucker,” Raphael says.
“Okay, and?”
“And? You’re mine.”
I flip my hair. “Am I? Am I marked? Have I accepted you as my
mate?”
“Marked? I only stop myself from marking you because you don’t want me to. But I’ll mark you right now if that’s the case.”
My face hardens, turning cold. “Don’t you dare.”
“Mark or not, you’re mine. I’ve claimed you,” he says.
“Only in your delusional mind does that mean anything.”
He growls, and we bicker through the night until the wake finally draws to its end. We gather around the pyre, the body set aflame after the King’s speech.

Now I’m in Raphael’s room. He refused to let me return to mine after the wake. As he sleeps, I stroke his hair. Deep down, he’s hurting, though he hides it well.
“I don’t want to lose you,” I whisper, tracing his cheeks.
This all scares me. The uncertainty of it all. There was no trace that anyone was behind the attack on Emmet, but how could there not have been? Ravens attacking and killing out of their own will is unheard of. I don’t want to, but my suspicions are all on Grimm. But why Emmet? Why would anyone want to kill
him?
That night, it’s hard to sleep, but I manage to do so. I’m the one to wake up first in the morning, and like last night, I stare at Raphael.

Eventually, he opens his eyes, locking them with mine.
“Morning,” he says.
I stare at him without saying anything.
“What is it?” he asks.
I kiss him without warning, my eyes wet. He kisses me back fiercely, but the moment he feels my tears, he pulls away.
“Why are you crying? Valeria, why are you crying?”
“I’m just… scared.”
“About what?”
“About losing the people I care about… you.”
His blue eyes make sure I don’t avert mine. “Say you are mine, Valeria. Say it.”
I answer him in silence, the words echoing only in my mind: You know I’ve always been yours.
He stares at me, waiting for me to say anything, but I don’t. I just close my eyes and lower my head. He kisses my forehead8:40

off, but a sudden knock ruins everything.
“Damn it,” he mutters.
“The King is requesting a meeting,” Urien says from behind the door.
Both Raphael and I sigh with disappointment. We haven’t been intimate in almost a week since he left.
When Raphael leaves for the meeting, I learn that the
confinement is lifted. So I get Max from my parents’ room and
head outside.
In the distance, I see kids throwing rocks at a few ravens perched on a tree.
“I wouldn’t do that,” I whisper to myself.
Max darts into the forest, and I chase after him like a madwoman—the only one daring to go in while everyone else hangs back in fear. The guards who usually shadow me are too distracted by the children to notice as I slip inside.
“Max! Come back!”
He doesn’t listen, too busy chasing a butterfly. We wander to the old dead tree and the pond, and I realize I’m not the only one reckless enough to be here. Someone else is waiting.

“Valeria.” He backs away.
“What are you doing?” I ask.
“I… came to feed the ravens.” He shakes his bag full of meat.
I also take a step back. “You’re training them, aren’t you?”
“No, I’m not.” He takes another step back, and suddenly, the birds in the trees all turn to me as if they’re readying themselves to fly at me.
“Grimm, don’t… please…”
He shakes, his face morphing into confusion.
“Valeria, what are you doing?” His eyes go above me.
Birds behind me in the trees also look at Grimm the same way the ones above him look at me, as if they want to tear him apart.
“What is going on?” I look at Grimm, and his eyes turn into
anger.
“Did you do it!” he shouts. “Did you kill Emmet?!”
“What?! No! You did!”
No, I didn’t! I was with people the whole time! I cam back 940

We stare at each other with a huge pause, realizing that neither of us could have done it.
“S-so, you didn’t…”
I shake my head. “No!” I give him a long stare. “And neither did you, did you?”
He slowly shakes his head. “No.”
I carefully take a seat on a boulder, and he does the same, sitting next to me, both of us now unafraid of each other.
“I’m sorry. I thought you had something to do with it,” I say.
“I’m sorry too, because I thought the same of you.”
