Chapter 36
~Valeria~
I watch the ravens fly together as if they were a source of power at Grimm’s command. After they slam into the first rogue, a flock breaks off from formation and rushes the stunned wolf. They swarm him, covering him completely. I can’t see a single hair of the werewolf. When they finally fly off, the wolf is dead -its eyes pecked out, body covered in bleeding lacerations, entrails spilling.
I stumble in shock and fall to the ground.
Grimm continues his hand movements, and another wolf is attacked. This time, a smaller flock breaks off, rushing the two wolves behind us. They don’t do much damage, but they distract them long enough.
I close my eyes and cover myself, bracing for the ravens to attack me next—but it never comes. Opening my eyes, I see Grimm deeply concentrating. The third wolf falls, and Grimm turns to another-when suddenly he drops to his knees as an axe whirls out of the darkness and buries itself in his back.
What is happening! I want to scream, but I can’t. My body damonly watch. Grimm collapses in front of me, kneelmg as

~The night that I died~
“Grimm!”
I hear Mom’s voice, but it feels so distant.
“Grimm!”
I remember-we were just driving. Mom and I had taken a short vacation, but we had to return to the castle abruptly when war was declared.
She was at the wheel, and then… something struck our car
head-on.
I see my body now, broken on the ground, thrown through the windshield. Then comes darkness, until a great battle is being fought, and I can see the Raven King, clear as day, dying alongside his adversary. A restless mist rises around me. In its midst stands a throne, solitary in the void. A strange man sits upon it, unmoving, as if asleep. A raven descends, perching on the throne’s edge.

~The first time I flew~
It’s all true! I can see it! It’s me!
I fly, watching everyone in the castle. I even see myself lying on the tower floor, sleeping. I’m seeing through the raven’s eyes!
For the first time ever, something good happened to me. And it was because of that night-the night of the accident. But I still don’t know what this is. I have to find out.
~Mate~
I examine the room-sparkling clean. At last I’m finished, though it’s late, and Mother must be looking for me.
I gather my cleaning supplies into a box and carry them out. But when I open the door, I stumble upon the most beautiful being I’ve ever seen. Jade. Her scent is pure joy. My fated mate. I had seen her before when she arrived, but she had never seen me. I had been hiding, dreading this moment. She will reject me-why wouldn’t she? Everyone does.
Her eyes find me, and her face twists into disgust. “No… no no
no…”
I lower my gaze.
3Hgw? How can you be… no…”

does it have to be someone like you!”
She runs, leaving me behind to feel it all-the rejection, the pain.
~The Ball~
I watch with wonder as the trapeze swirls in the air. It’s amazing -the lights, the sounds, all of it. I feel that maybe in another life I could have joined the circus. It would’ve been a fun life. This life I have now is only full of pain.
I watch Jade ascend the stairs. It’s the best vantage point, so everyone scrambles for a place up here. But when her eyes meet mine, she only rolls them.
It hurts. It hurts so much to be so unwanted by the person who
is meant to be your fate.
She walks straight to me, stomping, and stops in front of me. “Why are you here? Shouldn’t you be cleaning plates downstairs or something?”
“I’m just trying to enjoy the show,” I mutter.
“This is ruining my fun. I don’t want to have to see you. Why can’t you just accept the rejection already? Do you need to hear it again? Well, here it is—I don’t like you. I reject you. I. Reject. You! You got it?!”

So heartless. So selfish. What a horrible woman… I hate her, I
HATE HER!
I want to scream, I want to go crazy and punch and break, but I can’t. I’m surrounded by people. But all that pent-up anger builds until I can’t take it anymore, and then I feel them. I feel them coming to me, sensing my distress. The windows explode, and a swarm of ravens invades the room.

~The Power~
I can control them, but sometimes the power is too much. I don’t want to hurt anyone, so I have to practice.
Valeria… there’s something strange going on with her and the ravens. Is she like me? And is she the one who killed Emmet? She’s my friend, but I have to be careful around her.
“Grimm.”
I turn and freeze when I see her walking out of the trees.
“Valeria,” I whisper, taking a step back.
“What are you doing?”
“I… came to feed the ravens.” I show her my bag. filled with
meat.

“GRIMM!” I scream, crying.
“Our men got through the guards.” A rugged man, his face so scarred it’s barely recognizable, speaks. “What next, General Tiadora? Our men wait for orders.” He turns to a woman with long red hair, clad in a warrior’s fur outfit, tossing an axe in her hand-the same kind of axe that just killed Grimm.
“Rush the castle. Kill everyone.” She hurls the axe suddenly, slicing past me and cutting my cheek. The corner of her mouth lifts in a small, stoic smile.
“A runt,” she mutters, eyes narrowing on me before shifting to Grimm. “This place seems to be filled with them. Trash wolfless.”
Anger rises inside me. Grimm wasn’t weak. He was good. I doubted him until the end, but all he wanted was to be loved- just like me. And she took that away from him.
Who is this woman? Why did she kill Grimm? Why?!
My teeth clench. My hands shake in fists, holding back what little composure I have left. But it bursts out anyway. I scream. I scream so loud the birds scatter from the trees, startled, I keep screaming until my vision turns black.
Then come their screams-the woman and the scarred man who stood before me seconds ago.

strangers-picked to the bone.
For a few seconds, I’m in shock, locked in silence. Then the quiet breaks as smaller sounds slip through — ragged breathing.
“Grimm!”
A faint groan answers me.
“Grimm!”
–
I pick him up, but he screams, “It hurts!” The axe comes free from his back with a hard pull.
“You’re going to be okay! I’ll take you to the castle right now! Just hang in there.”
“No,” he says.
“But-”
