After about thirty minutes, the warriors return from battl. Raphael bursts through the doors, bare-chested, only in his pants. I rise and hurry toward him, scanning for wounds, desperate to be sure he isn’t hurt.

“You’re okay?” I ask, spotting a few scratches.

People sigh with relief and begin to evacuate the room. Raphael turns back to me. “It’s best if you stay inside the castle today. I’ll be attending meetings nonstop, so please, stay safe.”

I nod and step back, aware of the eyes beginning to watch. But I can feel his displeasure. He doesn’t want me to pull away.

“I’ll come see you later,” he says.

“Okay.” I give him a wave, though all I really want to do is kiss him.

When he leaves me, his displeasure clear in his stare, I stride out of the ballroom. At once, I spot Grimm with his mother. He murmurs something to her, sending her into the hall, then turns to me with a quick nod-his silent command to follow. Together we move through the tapestry room and climb the stairs to the

tower.

“What we did… was not normal.” It’s the first thing I say.

“So you’re like me…” he says.

“And what exactly is that?” I ask.

“I… have no idea.”

“You don’t?”

“I’m… sorry. I am so sorry.” He lowers his head, presses it against my shoulder, and remains quiet for a while. We both do.

“When I did what I did… I wasn’t thinking about the pain I was causing you,” he says.
