Chapter 270 This Trick Doesn’t Work

Hannah sat in front of her computer, took a deep breath, and died to play the w

The recording started with the farnar static. Hannah frowned, just as Bernardo software of yours isn’t working very well’

“Not working?” Barnaby asked, walking over

Hannah turned up the volume, but it was still just static

“Let me take a look, Barnaby said, leaning over the comer w

again.

A minute later, the static finally faded, and Gemma’s voice came on the reveng

“Gantt, stick to the plan we talked about. She heads out to the contride on Sven wat g exit on the outskirts.

“There’s a winding stretch there where accidents happen all the time. That’s you wys dat der The traffic cops will never figure out it was intentional, Gemma instiched

As Hannah listened, her eyes grew icy and her face clouded over Her hand denckelgrote songs hard into her palm she didn’t even notice the pain.

Barnaby saw this and placed his large hand over hers, gently poing her fist open bat as he long fagers tries to intertwine with hers, Hannah gave him a look and pulled her hard away.

The recording kept playing.

“Didn’t Iris say she was out of it? Gantt’s voice came through.

“Iris? You mean Iris Thole?” a third person chimed in.

The woman sounded a bit stuffed up, like she had a cold.

Hannah instantly dragged the mouse back to replay that part. That voice why does it sound so familia? the trought but no matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t remember where she’d heard it before

The recording kept going.

Gemma: “Yeah, the one I mentioned before. Iris talked to him about ways to threaten Rosale

Woman: “Fine, just do it her way, but make it rougher.”

Gemma: “Then let’s go with a big rig.*

Gantt: “If we screw this up, someone could end up dead!”

Gemma: “Relax. I’ll take care of everything, the car, the setup, all of it. You just need to show up and drive. Even things go south and someone dies, you won’t get blamed. The Thole family will make sure you’re in the dear.”

Gantt hesitated, staying quiet. In the background, the woman odughed again. From the sound of it, Hannan guessed she had a cold and maybe a sore throat.

The rest of the recording was pretty much the same as before.

Gemma: “I’ll give you 150 grand. Just follow my instructions. No matter how it tums out I’ll make sure your wife and daughter are looked after. We’ll get your wife the best doctors, and your daughter a spot at Cavalor School. That sound good?”

Gantt: “Alright! Just make sure you keep your word.”

The recording ended there. The woman hadn’t spoken much, and Hannah kept replaying that part over and over but the snippet was short and her cold made it hard to make out who it was

Hannah turned to ask Barnaby if he recognized the voice, but he was so close that his lips grazed her cheek as she moved She stiffened in surprise.

Feeling the warmth of her cheek against his lips, Barnaby froze for a moment, his deep gaze lingering on her their breaths mingling in the close space between them.

Hannah glanced away, then turned back. ‘Can you tell who it is she asked

Barnaby noticed her nervousness, a hint of a s

“Eleanor Thole?” Hannah muttered, trying to recall. She vaguely remembered something, but the last time she met Beanot her voice was different.

“Her voice isn’t usually like that,’ Barnaby said. “But maybe she practiced changing it.”

He was familiar with that trick. Back at the Scepter House, he’d deliberately deepen his voice when wearing a mask, so people wouldn’t recognize him.

Hannah got what he was saying. She’d tried disguising her own voice before too. But Eleanor’s sounded so off, it was almost unrecognizable, like it couldn’t even be her.

Suddenly, Hannah had a thought. “Did Eleanor ever have surgery on her vocal cords?” she asked.

A simple polyp removal wouldn’t really affect someone’s voice, but if the surgery was more serious, it could definitely change the way someone sounds.

Barnaby thought about it, then shook his head. “I don’t remember seeing anything in her files, but I do recall she was really sick once.”

Back when Rosalie had her accident, Barnaby had been too busy searching for Hannah to care about the mess going on in the Thole family.

Hannah narrowed her eyes. Tracking someone down just by their voice was no easy feat. It was going to take a ton of effort to confirm anything.

“Maybe we can hunt down some old interviews with Eleanor and compare the voices,” Barnaby suggested

Hannah didn’t object. She started searching online, but all the interviews she thought Eleanor had done seemed to have vanished.

“Let me help. It’ll go faster,” Barnaby said, pulling up a chair.

Hannah didn’t refuse. She scooted over, letting him use the desktop while she fired up her own custom-built laptop. They shared a desk, each typing away on their own computer.

While they were working, Hannah got up to use the restroom. When she came back, she noticed a bottle of red wine and two glasses had appeared on the desk.

Barnaby was swirling his wine glass, took a sip, and said, “I’m feeling a bit sleepy, so I thought I’d have some wine to perk myself up. Want some?”

Hannah was a total lightweight, one drink and she’d be out. She was pretty sure he was doing this on purpose. “No thanks If you’re tired, you should just go home,” she replied.

‘Drinking to stay awake? That’s a first, Hannah thought to herself.

“It’s fine, I can keep going for a while,” Barnaby replied.

But Hannah could tell he was just dragging things out on purpose. Before she knew it, it was already 12:30.

“Wow, it’s already this late?” Barnaby said, pretending to just notice the time. Then he put on a troubled look. “Ronan’s probably asleep by now, and I’ve had a few drinks, so I can’t drive. Mind if I stay over tonight?”

As he spoke, his deep eyes locked onto Hannah, full of hope.

Hannah was speechless.

‘Ha! I knew it. Classic move, Hannah thought to herself.

‘Seriously, who drinks wine to stay awake? What kind of excuse is that?’ she rolled her eyes inwardly.

Hannah smirked. “Sure, just go straight out the door.”

That’s the east wing.

Barnaby was speechless.

‘Tsk, looks like this old trick doesn’t work on her anymore,’ Barnaby thought to himself.

Meanwhile, Joe got off the bus with his basketball and headed for the back gate of the apartment complex From a distance, he spotted Chloe stepping out of a black Lamborghin with Reese plates, and he did a double take ‘Why is Chloe getting out of a Reese family car?’ Joe thought, puzzled.

He picked up his pace, and just as the Lamborghini pulled away Joe caught a good look at the driver it was the Reese family’s eldest son himself.

After Chloe got out of the car, she headed straight into the apartment complex. Suddenly, she heard Joe calling her from behind.

“Chloe!” Joe called out.

She turned around and saw Joe jogging over with his basketball She felt a little uneasy and shot a quick look across the street. Darren was already gone. ‘Hopefully my brother didn’t catch anything just now, she thought, trying not to look suspicious.

She tried to play it cool and flashed a smile. “Hey, Joe, did you go play ball with Christopher again?”

“Yeah, Joe replied, falling in step beside her. “So, where’d you go tonight?”

Chloe. “Just went out with a friend to see the city lights.”

“Was that friend the Reese family’s eldest son?” Joe asked.
