Chapter 44
“Hannah, you’re finally back,” Felicity said happily as she pulled Hannah into a warm, affectionate embrace.
Hannah felt a little awkward but didn’t pull away. She answered whatever Felicity asked.
After some small talk, Felicity pulled out a bank card.
“I heard you’re not living in the dorm but on your own. Are you managing alright?” She handed the card to Hannah. “There’s 30 thousand on here.
“I saved it myself. Use it if you need to. If it’s not enough, ask me. But whatever you do, don’t do anything that makes you unhappy.”
Her words were gentle, but Hannah could tell someone had been whispering in her mother’s ear, making her
worry.
Who that someone was was obvious.
“I’m staying at a friend’s place. Don’t worry. Take the card back. I’ve got my own money. Hannah pushed the card back.
Felicity felt a bit hurt that her daughter wouldn’t accept her help.
She assumed Hannah meant to get living expenses from Dorian and explained, “Your father’s still upset. With what happened last night with Susie, his mood has been bad.
“He went straight to the company this morning. He doesn’t know you’re back, so you might not get money from him. You should take mine.”
Clearly, Felicity didn’t know the full truth about last night.
“I didn’t come back for money. I came to see you. How’s your health?” Hannah said, taking her hand and checking her.
Felicity was touched and surprised.
Since Hannah moved out, her health had declined.
The doctor said she was suffering from energy deficiency, causing restlessness. She’d been on medication for
a while but hadn’t improved; she still had chest tightness and headaches now and then.
But Felicity had never told Hannah this. ‘How did she know?’ Felicity wondered.
After checking her, Hannah pulled out an acupuncture kit.
Felicity was amazed. “You know how to do acupuncture?”
“I learned from Grandma,” Hannah said, opening the kit.
She found the acupoints and inserted the needles with skilled precision.
After removing them, Felicity felt the tightness in her chest ease and the headaches disappear. She was pleasantly surprised.
She’d been on medication for half a month with no relief, yet a few needles made all the difference.
“Could you take a look at Grandma? She’s been in the hospital for a long time,” Felicity asked instinctively, but when she saw Hannah’s cold expression, she regretted speaking so quickly.
“Sorry, I just want our family to get along,” she added softly.
“We’ll talk about it later,” Hannah replied indifferently.
Felicity felt guilty. Her daughter only came home briefly, and she’d ruined the mood.
She didn’t bring it up again, hesitating over how else to give Hannah the card.
Hannah, packing up the acupuncture kit, saw through her mother’s hesitation.
“I have my own sources of income. You don’t need to give me money,” Hannah said.
Felicity imagined Hannah working part-time or doing odd jobs, which made her heart ache even more.
Unwilling to let go, she pulled out a black card.
“This is a supplementary card Arthur gave me before. The monthly limit is 150 thousand. I don’t use it, so take it,” she said.
Hannah kept silent.

Before lunch was served, Hannah rested with her eyes closed on the sofa.
Lucian walked over and kicked the sofa. “If you want to sleep, go back to your room. Don’t just lie here and be an eyesore.”
Hannah opened her eyes, her beautiful gaze cold and distant.
“What are you staring at? Want me to carry you upstairs?” Lucian snapped angrily.
“Lucian, how can you talk to your sister like that?” Felicity came out from the kitchen and explained, “Hannah, he actually wants you to check out the room upstairs.
“He’s been keeping it for you. He wants you to come back and live here.”
Hannah looked at Lucian in surprise. She had found him annoying before and had put him on Do Not Disturb.
Lucian’s ears flushed red. “Who wants her back? I’m just feeling sorry for her and letting her have the room.
Take it or leave it. Now come eat, I’m starving.”
He spun around and strutted toward the dining room like a proud peacock.
Hannah shook her head helplessly.
In the dining room, Lucian caught sight of Cici carrying a trash bag, about to throw away the milkshake bottles from the coffee table. He rushed over.
“Why are you touching my milkshake?” he snapped.
Cici shook the empty bottle. “Lucian, I think it’s finished.”
“Who said it’s finished?” Lucian snatched it away. “There is still a little left in here.”
He slurped the last bits.
“Finished? Do you want me to throw away the bottle?” Cici asked.
“No way. This bottle looks nice. I’ll wash it and keep it for flower arranging.”
Cici blinked. ‘When did Lucian start being so thrifty?’ she wondered.

After lunch, Hannah left early to go see Hedy.
Lucian was a bit annoyed that she left so fast without even checking out the room upstairs.
“Mom, how much pocket money have you secretly given her? She just took the money and left. So cold,” he said.
“She didn’t take any money from me. She said she can make her own,” Felicity replied.
She wished Hannah would accept money; it would at least help make up for seventeen years of regrets.
But Hannah wouldn’t take a single cent, much less the black card.
“Really?” Lucian sounded suspicious.
‘No wonder the gift she brought me back was just half a milkshake. How stingy,’ he wondered. ‘Well, for the sake of that half milkshake’s honor, I’ll give her some pocket money.’
*****
In the car, Hannah suddenly got a notification for a transfer.
She opened it and saw Lucian had sent her 8 thousand dollars.
Hannah froze for a moment.
Lucian: [Next time, don’t bring me such a stingy gift.]
Hannah wondered, ‘When did I ever give him a gift?’
Lucian: [At least bring a whole milkshake next time.]
Hannah smiled silently. “This little brother is kinda cute,’ she wondered.
Monday afternoon, study hall, Hannah rested her chin in one hand, scrolling casually through her phone with the other, giving off a cold vibe.
On her screen was a WhatsApp chat.
Piggy: [Boss, you’re incredible. I sent someone to the hospital to dig deep, but they couldn’t find Yvette or her daughter.]
Piggy: [After using some methods, we found out they disappeared the day after registering and starting treatment.]
Piggy: [The key is that her mother’s medical records kept updating.]
That meant someone found out Hannah was investigating Yvette and deliberately set up this cover-up.
If Hannah hadn’t sent someone to check on them, no one would have discovered that Yvette and her daughter were already missing.
Piggy: [All the leads are cut off now.]
Piggy: [Boss, what do we do? Should we call the police?]
Raven: [No need.]
If the mastermind could arrange such a perfect deception, calling the police would be useless.
Piggy: [By the way, Boss, you haven’t said why you want to investigate this poor mother and daughter.]
Raven: [Some things you shouldn’t ask about.]
Piggy: [I’m just curious.]
Before Piggy could say more, Hannah muted him.
It was suspicious that Yvette took her mother abroad for treatment.
‘Has the mastermind panicked because I am getting close to the truth?’ Hannah wondered.
