Chapter 57
At the entrance of Nexus Tower, a black Lincoln pulled to a stop, revealing Jane and Jasper in the back seat.
“We’re here, Jasper,” Jane said.
“You’re sure we can trust this guy?” Jasper questioned, skepticism etched on his face.
Jane explained, “Look, every hacker on the dark web respects Raven. If Raven turns this down, our job could rot there for a year with no takers. The underground market’s your only real option.
“Relax, he built our company’s firewall system. It’s never been breached. He’s solid.”
The bounty the Baker family had posted remained unanswered, instead drawing increasingly targeted attacks from hackers.
The Baker family’s corporate firewall was on the verge of total failure. With his parents overwhelmed by the crisis and his sister seeking help from every possible source, Jasper could no longer remain on the sidelines.
Yet for all his passion for music and art, he possessed no knowledge of corporate management or cybersecurity.
It occurred to him that the Dross family operated an internet firm and might know something about cybersecurity.
He reached out to Jane, only to find her solution involved the black market.
Though hiring through unofficial channels posed significant risks, the Bakers were left with no better options.
Reluctantly, Jasper agreed to come.
As they stepped out of the car and entered the lobby, a figure emerged from the elevator bank.
It was Hannah moving briskly, trailed by a man in a suit who appeared to be security personnel.
Jane’s eyes lit up at the sight.
‘What’s Hannah doing here? Nexus Tower is far beyond the Scotts’ means since their bankruptcy. She must be trying to skip out on a bill.’ The thought ignited her.
In Jane’s eyes, Hannah had brought ruin upon the Bakers, Susie, and especially her dear friend Lily.
Though Lily had never explicitly confirmed it, she had strongly hinted that Hannah was behind her downfall.
Here was the perfect chance for payback.
“Jasper, look. It’s Hannah,” Jane said, nudging him.
Jasper followed her gaze. His first thought was that this woman must be following him.
“What’s the hurry, Hannah?” Jane stepped directly into her path.
Hannah shot her an indifferent glance, too irritated to entertain this confrontation. “Move,” she stated coldly.
“If you’ve done nothing wrong, why run?” Jane blocked her again, signaling to the security guard near the
entrance.
“This woman can’t possibly afford to be here. You should detain her and check if anything’s missing or if she’s trying to leave without paying.” Jane spoke with such conviction that several guests turned to watch.
A few even stepped forward, forming a loose circle around Hannah.
Satisfied, Jane anticipated seeing Hannah thrown out or, better yet, given a rough handling on the way.
But the guard didn’t move. Instead, he studied Jane calmly. “May I ask who you are, miss? And on what authority are you giving orders?”
He had personally witnessed Hannah arriving with Barnaby, who had even held the car door for her. Crossing her was beyond consideration.
“How dare you speak to me like that? Do you want to keep your job?” Jane snapped, jabbing a finger toward him. “I’m a gold card member, and this is Jasper Baker. Someone like you couldn’t afford to offend him even if you sold everything you own.”
Watching her outburst, Jasper frowned. She was carrying on like a common fishwife, a far cry from the polished young woman he had imagined.
Whatever admiration he’d felt for her evaporated in that moment.
Just then, the lobby manager hurried over. Recognizing Jasper and Jane as regular patrons, he offered profuse apologies.
Somewhat placated, Jane lifted her chin. “Fire this incompetent guard immediately. I refuse to see his face here again.”
She then pointed at Hannah. “And detain this woman for proper questioning.”
“Of course,” the manager replied with repeated nods.
But when he turned and saw Hannah’s icy expression, the impatience simmering in her eyes, his composure
faltered.
With a professional smile, he addressed Jane, “Ms. Dross, perhaps it would be best if you refrain from visiting our establishment in the future.”
A quick gesture from him was all it took. Security immediately stepped forward, seized Jane, and began firmly escorting her from the building.
Both Jane and Jasper stood frozen, utterly bewildered by the sudden reversal.
“You can’t treat me like this! I’ll file a formal complaint! Let me go. I’m expecting someone. Ah!” Jane’s protests
faded into the distance before being cut off entirely.
“Find out who Jane was meeting and have them escorted out as well,” the lobby manager commanded through his radio.
A hushed tension fell over the spectators. Nexus Tower catered exclusively to gold card members, each required to maintain annual expenditures of no less than two million dollars.
Yet this manager had just expelled a privileged client and her guest without hesitation.
All eyes turned to Hannah, curious what kind of person could command such deference.
The crowd lingered, their eyes fixed on Hannah as they hoped for more drama, but the manager promptly ushered them away.
“Ms. Carter, our sincerest apologies for this unpleasantness,” the manager said with a deep, obsequious bow.
Jasper watched the scene, his irritation growing with every servile gesture. He moved to step forward.
“Step aside.” Before he could reach Hannah, Ronin intercepted him and firmly pushed him back.
Without so much as a glance in Jasper’s direction, Hannah swept out of the building, her face cold and unreadable.
“Ronin?” Jasper recognized the man as Barnaby’s personal assistant.
Though the connection might escape others, Gemma had drilled into them the importance of knowing every member of the Thole family, down to the key staff of its most influential figures.
Ronin shot him a brief glance, failing to place Jasper immediately. Prioritizing Hannah, he dismissed the interaction and strode off without a word.
Being brushed aside by both of them stung, but what truly ignited Jasper’s fury was the dawning realization: Hannah had clearly aligned herself with Ronin, who in turn seemed deeply invested in her.
‘Of course, Jasper fumed inwardly. ‘Why else would the manager debase himself for a ruined socialite unless she had Ronin’s backing?’ The thought alone set a blaze of indignation burning within him.
‘She’s utterly shameless,’ he thought, contempt twisting his features. ‘First, she tells Susie she’s into me, and now she’s throwing herself at Barnaby’s assistant?’
Ronin’s status, however considerable, did nothing to soothe the insult.
The fact that Hannah would choose an assistant over him felt like a deliberate slap in the face, as if she saw him as inferior to a mere member of Barnaby’s staff.
