Chapter 107 A Soothing Head Massage

“Forget it… I’ll have to trouble you to give me a massage then.”

Leighton stared at Zora for a long moment, his lips pressing into a firm line as if locked in an inner struggle.

He glanced across the table at her, who had slowed down her eating pace, like a bird that had just soared high, only to have its feathers dampened by light rain, forced to land dejectedly on a branch.

He let out a quiet sigh, his tone soft with reluctant surrender.

“You don’t have to agree if you’re uncomfortable,” Zora said gently. “I can mix you a calming herbal tonic instead. It’ll ease your insomnia little by little.”

She could feel the genuine reluctance he’d tried to hide just now. If he truly disliked the idea, she was ready to prepare the herbal tonic for him.

Insomnia could be treated in more ways than one.

Still, he hadn’t slept properly in far too long, and a massage was the fastest way to relax his

tense nerves.

“It’s alright. I can’t turn down your kindness.”

Leighton picked up his fork and took a few more bites of food as he spoke.

Zora watched him shift his mind again and thought to herself. Handsome men really do have mood swings that change in an instant.

They finished their meal together. Leighton hadn’t made overly large portions—just enough for the two of them. Every dish suited her taste perfectly, and Zora ate her fill.

“I’ll clean up. You don’t need to trouble yourself with this.”

Leighton stopped Zora as she reached to clear the table. He tidied the plates and silverware quickly, placing everything into the dishwasher, then washed his hands and came back out.

“What should I do?” Leighton asked, looking over at her.

It was already late, and he didn’t want to keep her up past her usual rest time. He couldn’t bring himself to turn down her thoughtful gesture either.

“Find somewhere comfortable to lie down,” Zora said after a moment of thought.

“Will the couch work?” Leighton glanced toward the living room sofa.

“Pick somewhere you can lie comfortably for the whole night,” Zora reminded him.

The couch would do, but she wanted him to be fully relaxed.

“The couch it is, then.”

Leighton walked over and lay back on the sofa, not taking her words about resting the whole night too seriously.

His insomnia was severe; even with the calming herbal sachet, he still woke up countless times through the night. Ever since that traumatic incident in his childhood, he’d never once slept soundly.

He lay flat on his back, the sharp glow of the crystal chandelier shining down above him.

Zora stepped beside the sofa and knelt down on one knee.

Her delicate face came into his view, her eyes clear and tranquil.

The restlessness tangled inside him slowly began to settle.

“Take this to kneel on.”

Noticing her bare knee pressed against the cold hardwood floor, Leighton handed her a soft throw pillow from the couch. Her delicate skin looked almost stark against the pale floor, and he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of discomfort for her.

Zora took the pillow and set it under her knee. The cold floor really did sting if knelt on directly.

“Close your eyes,” Zora said softly.

“…Do I have to?”

Leighton’s Adam’s apple rolled slowly. Lying there while she looked down at him felt strangely awkward. Very few people ever stood over him like this—no one dared to, in fact.

He was always the one looking down on others, never the other way around.

Yet even with the odd unease, there was no trace of displeasure in his heart.

“…You don’t have to.”

Zora hesitated for a second. She’d hoped he would relax and fall asleep, but he refused to shut his eyes.

With any other patient, she would have scolded them for being stubborn. But this was Leighton -strikingly handsome, and handsome people clearly got special treatment.

Besides, Zora remembered his resistance when she first mentioned the massage. It felt like the man before her was actually a little afraid.

Zora didn’t force him.

He could close them once the massage started taking effect.

Leighton breathed a quiet sigh of relief, though the relief was short-lived. His pupils widened then shrank as a soft, gentle touch landed lightly on the top of his head.

His body tensed instantly. His hands at his sides curled tightly into fists, his breathing growing heavier.

He pressed his lips into a straight line, fighting the sudden urge to sit up and pull away. Restraining the strong resistance surging inside him, the amber shade of his eyes deepened.

“Want to close your eyes now?” Zora’s soft, calm voice drifted to his ears.

At the same time, gentle pressure began to ease into his scalp. The sharp irritation in his heart faded little by little, and his pupils slowly lightened back to their usual tone.

Leighton’s gaze shifted slightly. The girl sat beside him, her slender arm reaching out, delicate fingers threading softly through his hair.

Her eyes were as clear and lovely as polished glass, focused entirely on what she was doing. There was no trace of the cold, greedy glint he’d seen in so many others—pure, untainted, impossible not to want to protect.

His thoughts grew tangled, flickering between the cruel stares of others and this pair of impossibly clear eyes, along with her soft, sweet voice lingering in his ears.
