Chapter 111 Hallway Confrontation

What Zora had no idea about was that the person on the other end of her phone also had faint pink tingling at the tips of their ears.

Staring at the cute little rabbit emoji on the screen, she pressed her pale lips tightly together.

Zora soon set her phone aside and pulled out her schoolwork to catch up.

Senior year coursework moved at a brutal pace. By this stage, it all relied on self-discipline; teachers rarely checked assignments. If you slacked off on your own, there was little anyone could do.

Zora was never naturally gifted at studying. Though she hated doing homework, she still pushed herself to keep up, locked in a constant battle with endless assignments.

“Zora, it’s just the two of us for lunch today. Maya’s off somewhere.”

When noon rolled around, Hallie walked over to ask Zora to grab a meal together.

“Should we head off-campus to eat, or hit the cafeteria?” Hallie linked arms with Zora and strolled toward the hallway.

“The cafeteria’s fine.” After a full morning of back-to-back science classes on Tuesday, Zora’s mind felt foggy and drained. She had no desire to leave school, preferring something quick and easy on campus.

“Sounds good to me. The cafeteria’s food is actually pretty decent, plus they’ve got a dessert bar we can swing by later.”

Hallie didn’t mind either way-it was never about the food, just who she ate it with. Eating alongside Zora made anything taste great.

The two walked side by side toward the cafeteria. Plenty of students passing by recognized Zora and stole glances her way.

After more than two weeks adjusting to life at Havenridge High School, Zora had grown used to the attention. Lately, several girls had even left her small cookies, chocolate bars, and candies, saying they felt sorry for her.

They’d just stepped out of the hallway and headed for the stairs when two girls came down from the floor above: Jolie and Tessa.

Jolie had been resting at home for days, still clearly shaken by the drama blowing up on the campus forum. Her complexion remained pale and worn.

Tessa had her arm looped through Jolie’s, murmuring softly for her to at least eat a little something.

It was an awkward, unexpected run-in.

“Get out of my way.”

Jolie fixed Zora with a cold, unyielding stare, dropping the gentle act she’d kept up before. Her lips pressed into a thin line, no longer bothering to keep up a polite pretense.

The fallout from the campus forum incident had left their relationship completely fractured. The peaceful coexistence Wendy had hoped for was now utterly impossible.

Jolie’s hands clenched tight at her sides as she glared at Zora. She’d severely underestimated the girl-Zora had not only wormed her way into the Marlow family’s favor but also landed a brutal counterattack against her. Truly, the quiet ones were the most dangerous.

If she hadn’t gone to her father for help, the online backlash would’ve dragged on indefinitely.

Zora always acted dull and unassuming at home, yet she hid a calculating, cunning mind beneath that facade.

“Oh? And what if we don’t move?

“Where’s your sweet, poised act? Not even a simple greeting for Zora? Can’t keep up the perfect elder sister routine anymore? Staring daggers at her like that-plotting another scheme, are you?”

Hallie slipped one hand into her pocket, lifting her gaze to meet the pair standing a step higher on the stairs, her aura unshaken and unyielding.

“Hallie! Do you really need to be so confrontational? That campus forum drama blew over ages ago. What’s the point of holding a grudge?” Tessa stepped in to defend Jolie, her usually soft tone edged with irritation.

Jolie shot Hallie a frigid glance. “Miss Sloan, do you really think you can control where people look?”

The Knox and Sloan families were of equal social standing, so Jolie had no reason to fear Hallie.

After everything that had happened online, they would never be friends-and she saw no reason to spare Hallie’s feelings.

Tessa glanced at Jolie beside her and sighed inwardly. None of her gentle advice had sunk in; Jolie only harbored deeper resentment toward Zora.

“Your nasty stare’s ruining my mood. What if you scare Zora half to death?”

Hallie could tell Jolie was seething with pent-up frustration after days of festering anger. Her words dripped with hostility, no longer able to hide her true bitterness.

Hallie let out a cold scoff to herself.

“Are you Zora’s lapdog? So quick to jump to her defense? What favor has she done you, that you’re so eager to orbit her every move?” Jolie sneered, looking down at Hallie with undisguised contempt.

“At least it’s better than defending a cold-hearted fake like you-ungrateful and lower than dirt.”

Hallie let out a sharp laugh, raising her voice for everyone nearby to hear.

More students trickled down the stairs, pausing their rush to lunch to gather and watch the unfolding confrontation.

“Say that one more time, Jolie.” Zora’s expression turned icy cold.

“What? Mad I’m calling Hallie out? I mean, she’s your—”

A mocking smirk tugged at Jolie’s lips. She even leaned forward slightly toward Zora, reveling in provoking her, but she never finished the cutting remark.

Slap!

A sharp, crisp sound echoed through the quiet stairwell.
