Chapter 118 I Am Her Guardian

Tessa let out a quiet, unseen sigh of relief. No one had expected Wendy to lose her temper so recklessly.

Only Jolie paid no mind to her disappointment. Her gaze locked tightly onto the tall, handsome man stepping inside, her body tensing and her expression twisting faintly.

Her heart thundered uncontrollably at the sight of him. She’d never imagined getting to meet Leighton in person. Her clenched hands trembled slightly.

Leighton was the one Zora had called for help-the famed Mr. Pierce himself.

He stood beside Zora, towering and strikingly handsome. Cold and unyielding to everyone else, he now stood firmly by Zora’s side like her staunchest supporter.

Everyone knew Leighton never let any woman get close to him. Why was he defending that nobody girl?

When had Zora even met him? Why had she never heard about it?

Jolie’s nails dug sharply into her palms.

What a scheming girl, managing to wrap Leighton around her finger.

Tessa’s eyes drifted toward Jolie almost instinctively. She didn’t miss the surge of bitter resentment flashing across her face, and an uneasy weight settled in her chest.

How could Jolie be like this?

Yet as she looked closer, the hatred in Jolie’s eyes didn’t fade one bit-she stared at Zora with raw jealousy and malice.

Tessa began to doubt Jolie’s earlier excuse that she’d only been scared.

This went far beyond a simple falling-out. It looked like genuine hatred.

“Terrible taste in people.” The cold remark reached Tessa’s ears.

She shot a glare at Hugo behind her, her tone sharp with annoyance. “If you have nothing nice to say, keep your mouth shut.”

“Tch, can’t even take a little comment.” Hugo shrugged indifferently.

“Zora, I’m here.”

Leighton turned toward the stunned girl, his icy demeanor melting away completely as he spoke to her in a soft, gentle tone.

Zora blinked slowly as his warm voice sank in, still dazed from the shock.

“Leighton…”

Her voice came out hoarse, barely audible, breaking anyone who heard it’s heart.

“I’m here now, don’t be afraid. I’m sorry I’m late.”

Leighton’s heart twisted with pain at her blank, teary eyes. He stepped forward, pulled her gently into his arms, and stroked her back softly, murmuring quiet comfort again and again.

Wendy stumbled back after being pushed away, staring at the two embracing each other. Her own hands still shook.

What had she almost done? She’d nearly raised her hand to hit Zora.

“Mom, you were far too impulsive.” Yale supported her, his tone heavy with disapproval.

Even furious, she had no right to lash out at Zora like that.

“Mrs. Knox, this is nothing more than a silly quarrel between teenage girls,” Clark said, still shaken by the scene. He stood up, looking at Wendy with clear disagreement. “The kids are old enough now. We can’t resort to raising our hands over every little conflict.”

Wendy stayed silent, her mind thrown into chaos and unease.

Zora remained nestled in Leighton’s arms without a word. Leighton stared down at her, his worry impossible to hide.

“Zora, I’m so sorry I’m late.”

The girl seemed utterly frightened, frozen silent and still, and his concern only grew deeper.

“Sweetheart, please say something to me.”

Jolie bit her lip hard, eyes turning red with rage as she listened to Leighton’s tender tone.

Shameless little bitch! How dare she make such an aloof, powerful man speak to her with such humble gentleness?

“Thank you.”

Zora finally spoke. She fluttered her eyelashes, pulled back from his embrace, lowered her head, and whispered softly.

Her voice was faint, fragile as a wisp of wind ready to vanish at any moment.

“It’s my fault for being late.” Leighton blamed himself entirely. Traffic had been terrible during the lunch rush, slowing him down on the way here.

Hallie and Elara stared wide-eyed, utterly stunned to see Leighton being so gentle and humble enough to apologize.

Was this really the cold, sharp-tongued Leighton they knew?

That soft tone didn’t seem to belong to him at all.

They’d never once heard him speak to anyone this warmly in all their years knowing him.

Just listening gave them goosebumps.

“Zora, has your guardian arrived?” Clark ran a hand over his forehead, overwhelmed by the messy situation.

All the other students’ parents were already present.

He’d assumed the handsome young man was Zora’s family, but Hallie had just called him her cousin, leaving him unsure of his relation to Zora.

Yale was about to speak when Leighton cut him off firmly. “I am her guardian.”

Yale’s expression darkened instantly, and Wendy froze in shock.

If Leighton was standing in as Zora’s guardian, what did that make them?

Hallie stared at Zora in complete surprise, amazed that her friend had managed to get her cousin to come act as her guardian.

Elara also shot Leighton a surprised glance.

Mother and daughter exchanged a look, both lost for words.

Elara’s thoughts hung unspoken: Since when is your cousin this close to Zora?
