Chapter 117 Unjust Anger
“Thank you so much, Hallie. I haven’t had lunch yet.”
Grace glanced at Hallie, who was being thoughtful and polite, then looked over at Jolie, standing silent and refusing to apologize. A dull headache washed over her.
Gordon had already stepped out to patrol the school grounds again.

“Mom, would you like something to eat?” Hallie turned to Elara, who couldn’t take her eyes off
Zora.
“I’m fine, dear. I ate before I came.” Elara shook her head.
She said nothing about her daughter not offering any treats to Jolie and Tessa. After all, the girls had just gotten into a fight-there was no warmth between them to begin with.
“Zora, try some. My family chef makes the most amazing desserts.” Hallie urged Zora warmly.
“Go on, sweetie, have a taste.” Elara’s gaze stayed soft and fond on Zora. “I don’t know what flavors you like, but you can tell me anything. I’ll have the chef make it and send some over next time.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Sloan.” Zora gave a quiet thanks. She scanned the delicate pastries, skipped the cream-filled ones, and picked up a sweet potato butter croissant.
She’d sat through morning classes and dealt with the commotion ever since, and her stomach had long been empty.
Beneath Elara’s gentle, caring gaze, Zora took small, slow bites.
Hallie grabbed a mango cream waffle and bit into it too. The fight had left her tired and hungry.
She’d planned to treat her classmates to a meal later, so she’d asked her mom not to bring full entrees-only light snacks to hold them over.
Right then, Tessa’s older brother walked into the office.
Hugo Frost wore a slate-blue button-up shirt tucked neatly into black casual trousers. With a slim build and silver-rimmed glasses, he had a quiet, refined look.
He stepped inside, first checking Tessa to make sure she wasn’t seriously hurt, then frowned and stood off to the side.
“Why are you here?” Tessa frowned at the sight of him, her tone sharp and irritable.
She’d called their father, not this annoying brother of hers.

“Dad’s tied up with work, so he sent me instead.” Hugo was used to her cold attitude and stood quietly beside her.
He turned to Grace with an apologetic tone. “Ms. Voss, my apologies for causing you trouble.”
“Jolie!”
A worried voice echoed from the hallway.
Wendy had arrived, with Yale walking beside her.
Wendy had gotten the phone call just as Yale came home for lunch, and he’d overheard Jolie saying she’d gotten into a fight with Zora at school.
“Mom.”
Jolie’s expression shifted the second she saw Wendy. Her eyes turned red and watery. She looked up with a hoarse voice, fat tears rolling down her pale cheeks one after another.
“Jolie, it’s alright, honey. Mom’s here, and I’ll fix this for you.”
Wendy’s heart ached at the sight of Jolie’s swollen eyes. She hurried into the office and pulled her into a comforting embrace.
“Mom.” Jolie buried her face in Wendy’s chest, letting her see her bruised, puffy cheek clearly.
Yale frowned sharply at Jolie’s swollen face, then glanced over at Zora, who was still eating casually as if nothing had happened.

“Zora! How could you hit your own sister? Is this what I taught you? You’ve always picked on her at home, but this time she did nothing to provoke you-and you still hurt her like this!
“How much more are you going to torment her? I never should have brought you back to this family in the first place!”
Wendy’s eyes widened at Jolie’s bruised face, overcome with heartache and rising rage. She spun toward Zora, stormed over, and raised her hand to slap her.
A faint triumphant smirk tugged at Jolie’s lips as she watched from behind.
Unnoticed by her, Tessa caught the subtle look and frowned slightly.
The sharp sweep of Wendy’s hand hung in the air. Zora froze on the spot, her eyes wide with shock.
“Zora!”

“Zora!”
“Zora!”
Three voices cried out in alarm.
No one had expected Wendy to lash out without a single word of inquiry.
“Mrs. Knox! That’s going too far!”

Fine bet
A cold, deep voice cut through the room just as someone caught Wendy’s wrist mid-motion.
Wendy glared up through her anger. The man’s face was icy cold, his grip on her wrist tight enough to feel like it might crush her bones.
She winced in pain.
“Mr. Pierce?”
Leighton’s gaze was frigid enough to send a chill down anyone’s spine. Wendy’s brows tightened sharply from both pain and unease.
“Is this how you act as a mother? You judge without hearing a single side, letting your temper cloud all reason.” Leighton pushed her hand away sharply.
Wendy stumbled backward two steps, struggling to steady herself.
“Mom.” Yale stepped forward to support her, his frown deepening. He hadn’t expected his mother to lose her temper and strike out so suddenly.

He shot a worried glance at Zora, silently relieved the blow hadn’t landed. If it had, the rift between them would be beyond mending forever.
“Leighton! What are you doing here?” Hallie blurted out in surprise.
“Leighton!”
Elara and the others let out quiet sighs of relief the moment Leighton stopped Wendy’s hand.
None of them could believe Wendy would act so rashly. Both girls were her daughters, yet she’d been ready to strike Zora without even hearing her side of the story.
