Chapter 122 Leighton Stands Up for Zora

The more Leighton let his thoughts run wild, the hotter his unprovoked anger burned.

How could anyone dare bully the young, gifted healer who’d once helped him?

What’s more, Jensen had trusted him to look after the girl. If something terrible had happened today, Jensen would chew him out the second he came back.

He wasn’t about to take criticism lying down-he had to let out this frustration right now.

“Mrs. Knox, I’ve got a question. Between that girl standing behind you and Zora, which one is actually your daughter?”

He raised an eyebrow, fixing his gaze on Wendy.

Wendy kept silent and refused to answer.

“Zora, your mom doesn’t want you.”

He turned his head to look at Zora.

Before Zora could utter a word, Elara pinched him sharply. What a bratty thing to say!

“I’m the one who doesn’t want them. I was never raised by them anyway.”

Zora frowned and retorted in a dead-serious tone, not a shred of care lingering for the Knox family in her voice.

She’d long known Wendy’s decision. Hearing it again today felt utterly meaningless to her.

“Exactly. It’s our Zora who’s dumping these dimwits first.”

Leighton winced at the pinch, pulled his hand away, and sidled up next to Zora for protection.

Elara blinked. Is all my worrying for nothing?

“Tsk. What blatant favoritism.” Leighton repeated solemnly, still staring at Wendy.

Yale closed his eyes helplessly.

He’d already given up on trying to hold Leighton back.

Once you got on Leighton’s bad side, there was no shaking him off easily.

“Mrs. Knox, I know you’re biased, but I still have to ask-is Zora really your biological daughter? Could

you have found the wrong child? No parent would treat their own flesh and blood like this. Your favoritism is off the charts.

“You treat your own daughter like a sworn enemy. I’ve never seen a parent act this way toward their kid. Isn’t that right, Auntie?”

Leighton curled his lip and glanced over at Elara.

“If this sweet girl were my daughter, I’d spoil her rotten and give her the whole world.”

Elara nodded firmly.

“Sweetie, why not come home with me? My house has been missing a lovely girl just like you.”

Elara’s beautiful eyes locked onto Zora, brimming with earnest anticipation.

“If Zora were my sister, I’d protect her every single day. Having a sister like her would make me grin in my sleep.”

Hallie chimed in with a laugh, snickering to herself as if daydreaming of some wonderful fantasy.

She really wished Zora could be her sister for real.

“You see that, Mrs. Knox? That’s how a mother should treat her daughter.

“Tsk. Your family isn’t just ridiculously biased—you don’t even know how to raise kids properly. You’ve spoiled an ungrateful ingrate who manipulates everyone around her, never admits her mistakes, and always steps on others to climb higher.

“I truly wonder how you raised someone so utterly unbearable to be around.”

Leighton shot a dismissive glance at the two daydreaming women indulging in their little fantasies, then turned back to face Wendy and the others, whose expressions had turned icy with rage.

He shook his head as he spoke, his face full of undisguised disdain.

Wendy and Yale burned with embarrassment.

They longed to fire back, yet faced with Leighton’s arrogant, unbridled attitude, they had no idea where to start.

They’d long heard tales of Leighton-he never held back his sharp words, caring nothing for seniority or status. If he was in a bad mood, no one got to stay comfortable.

Everyone had seen him even roll his eyes at his own aunt just now.

Jolie’s heart twisted painfully at his harsh remarks. How could he talk about her like that? Her eyes quickly turned red and watery.

“Tsk. Why the sudden silence? Did I come on too strong? Cat got your tongue, Mrs. Knox?”

Leighton had rambled on for ages without getting a single reply. The three across from him sat there like mutes, and the whole scene quickly grew boring to him.

How could their comebacks be this weak?

“Here.”

A soft little voice drifted to his ear.

He looked down to see Zora holding out a glass of water toward him.

Leighton stared at her, confused by her gesture.

What was she up to?

Did she want him to stop arguing?

“Arguing must be tiring. Don’t wear out your throat,” Zora murmured quietly.

She’d never learned how to quarrel with others. Listening to Leighton’s sharp rebuttal today had taught her a thing or two-so this was how you stood up to the Knox family.

It wasn’t like she felt nothing about how Wendy and the rest had treated her, but she’d never had the words to fire back. Her mentor had never taught her to argue. Everyone in Maplewood had always doted on and sheltered her. After coming to Seacrest, the Knox family’s cold attitude made Zora realize just how warm and protected her life in the small town had always been.

The world was full of cruel people; her mentor had always shielded her from all the darkness out there.

Watching Leighton stand up for her today filled her with quiet joy.

She’d learned her lesson. If the Knox family ever pestered her again, she’d know exactly how to stand her ground.

“Thanks, little Zora.”

Leighton froze for a moment at her gentle words, then smiled and took the glass.

Wendy watched Zora’s kind gesture, her gaze blazing with fury.

Such an ungrateful girl.

It already stung deeply to be scolded so harshly by someone far younger than herself. She

burned to snap back, yet knew Leighton would only dig in harder if she did. Left with no choice, she could only swallow her anger and hold her tongue.
