She could not fathom how someone could grow up with such poor manners. No wonder she’d lost her mother-if her mom were still alive, she’d be livid to see her child act this way.

Yale let out a long breath and said, “Mr. Pierce, we admit we’re in the wrong here. You’ve said your piece and let us have your words. Let’s just let this matter drop.”

Everything that had happened today was far beyond what he’d expected, spiraling way out of control.

Today, he’d seen firsthand why everyone warned him never to cross Leighton-this man was nothing short of a ruthless force.

Yale ran in entirely different social circles from Leighton and rarely crossed paths with him. Leighton was closer to Jensen, while Yale had barely any connection to him at all.

Even with Jensen as a mutual acquaintance, Leighton had shown their family no favor whatsoever today.

It was clear the Knox family still lacked real standing and influence.

Yale closed his eyes, pushing down the burning urge inside him to grow stronger by any means

necessary.

“Jolie! Apologize at once!”

Yale turned to Jolie, whose eyes were glistening with tears, and spoke sharply.

This mess could not drag on any longer.

Still drowning in hurt, Jolie flinched at his stern tone. She could tell Yale was truly furious.

Worse still, Leighton’s mocking stare cut through her like a knife.

“Now!”

Jolie bit her lip, glancing at the group standing tall and triumphant across from her, before settling her gaze on Hallie.

“I’m sorry.”

“You owe Zora an apology too.”

Hallie folded her arms and tilted her chin, making it clear she wasn’t letting it slide.

Jolie’s eyes drifted to Zora, then lingered on the tall man beside her for long seconds, unable to bear the scorn in his gaze.

She squeezed her eyes shut.

“I… am… sorry.”

The words came out through gritted teeth, cold and strained, brimming with suppressed hatred.

She couldn’t afford to make Leighton think even worse of her.

Just you wait, Zora.

This feud between us won’t end-not until one of us breaks completely.

Hallie and the others watched Jolie’s reluctant, miserable expression as if she were facing a death sentence. They found her demeanor unpleasant to look at and chose not to push her further.

It was plain to see Jolie already hated them all deep down.

“You need to apologize too.”

Hugo shot a sideways glance at Tessa.

“I’m sorry, Zora, Hallie.”

Tessa gave her apology without hesitation.

Still, she glanced at Jolie’s devastated expression and sighed inwardly.

“Now that this is settled, thank you all for taking the time to come here today. I appreciate your patience.”

Grace stepped forward, sounding worn out. What should have been a simple apology had dragged on for nearly two hours.

Wendy grabbed Jolie by the arm and led her toward the exit, not sparing Zora a single glance.

Yale walked behind them, glancing back with a complicated look at Zora, who stood beside Leighton.

Zora never met his eyes for even a second, leaving all the unspoken words on Yale’s tongue trapped inside.

“Zora, just you wait and see,” Jolie hissed into Zora’s ear as they crossed paths.

The hallway was filled with the sound of everyone heading downstairs, so Hallie didn’t catch the words.

“What did Jolie say to you?” Hallie asked Zora.

“She said to just wait and see,” Zora replied.

She paid no mind to Jolie’s petty threat.

If Jolie dared lay a hand on her again, Zora would show no mercy.

She still had plenty of herbal poison powders she’d never gotten to use.

She wouldn’t mind testing their effects on Jolie at all.

“Hey Mrs. Knox!” Hallie called out loud enough for Wendy and the others, who hadn’t gotten far, to hear. “Your real daughter’s just threatened your actual flesh and blood. Sounds like she’s fixing to cause more trouble for Zora soon. You’d better get ready to clean up the next mess!”

Elara and Leighton shot Hallie a quick look but said nothing, making no move to stop her.

Up ahead, Yale froze in his steps and turned to stare at Jolie beside him.

“Yale, you can’t believe what they’re saying. We grew up side by side-you know what kind of person I am. I only lost my temper today because I was upset…”

Jolie never thought Zora would be so shameless as to actually repeat it. Feeling Yale’s cold stare, she bit her lip and looked up at him with hurt eyes.

“Jolie, don’t go looking for trouble with Zora again.”

Yale held her gaze, saying nothing more than that one firm warning.

“I have work at the office. Mom, I’ll have the driver take you home.”

With that, he turned and strode away.

“Mom, is Yale mad at me?”

His cold gaze made Jolie feel as if her every hidden thought had been seen through, sending a chill through her chest. She leaned into Wendy’s side, sounding hurt and wronged.

Her face was pale, eyes still red-rimmed, with the faint swelling on her cheek still plain to see.

“Of course not. Your brothers have always spoiled you the most. Yale’s just tied up with work. If anyone’s to blame here, it’s Zora. She’s utterly out of line-taking an outsider’s side to turn against her own family. She has no sense of decency at all. I don’t have a daughter like her.”
