Chapter 156 Hidden Past of the Hale Family

89

“Did something happen to you, Kian?” Zora asked softly, noticing the weary frown lingering on Kian’s face ever since they left the hospital.

“I’ve been thinking about Tessa’s condition. A blood clot is blocking one of her vital cerebral vessels, and the spot is extremely risky to operate on.”

Kian did not hide his worries from her.

“I only have a fifty percent success rate for the surgery; it’s an even toss-up between success and failure. I’ve been trying to figure out ways to raise those odds.

“The Frosts even invited people from the Hale family over for help, yet he turned out to be utterly useless. I have to come up with other solutions soon.

“She’s still so young. It would be such a tragedy if she never woke up again.”

As Tessa’s attending physician, Kian simply wanted to save his patient with all his heart.

A fifty percent chance was already fairly decent in medical terms, but Cedric insisted on seeking higher safety margins, which was why he reached out to the Hale family in the first place.

They had hoped even the distant branch members of the Hales would possess some of the family’s renowned medical skills, yet the person they sent over was nothing more than a spoiled rich heir who knew nothing about medicine at all.

It was nothing but a total waste of time.

No wonder the Hale family had been steadily declining for the past two decades.

Ever since the main bloodline passed away, the entire clan had fallen apart, clinging only to their old fame and wealth to get by.

Once on equal footing with the Pierce and Marlow families, the Hale name had faded almost completely from public view these days. Even the Nolan family had risen up and overtaken their status later on.

Back in their prime, the Hales had full control over the medical industry, with their influence spreading all across the country and even overseas.

“Kian, you can arrange another brain scan for Tessa tomorrow,” Zora suggested gently. “Her physical condition changes every single day. Things might turn out much better by then.”

“We run regular daily check-ups on our patients.”

Kian softened his expression and smiled warmly at his younger cousin.

“Kian, what kind of people are the Hales exactly?”

Zora hesitated for a moment before voicing her curiosity. She could not help wondering if her mentor had any connections to this mysterious clan, though she had always obeyed her mentor’s words and never gone looking for clues on her own. Still, any mention of them naturally sparked her interest.

“The Hale family used to be a top-tier influential household right here in Seacrest, holding equal social status as ours,” Kian explained patiently.

“Twenty years ago, for unknown reasons, the core Hale family suddenly chose to emigrate overseas and withdrew entirely from local affairs. Tragically, merely three years after their move, a devastating explosion took the lives of all three members of the Hale family, leaving no survivors behind.

“Now the family is run solely by their distant collateral relatives. These people have reaped all the benefits from the achievements of the former clan leader, yet never bothered to master any genuine medical expertise. They spend all their days indulging in luxury and idle fun. That useless young man the Frosts hired is exactly one of them, who hasn’t learned even a single fraction of the real Hale medical techniques.”

There was clear regret and disappointment in Kian’s tone as he spoke.

Without their talented core bloodline, the Hale family was doomed to gradual decline. If their reckless younger generation kept squandering the family heritage, the once-glorious clan would vanish from sight before long.

“Why did they choose to move abroad 20 years ago? And how did that fatal explosion happen three years later?” Zora asked instinctively.

“No one knows the exact reason for their emigration. I was far too young back then and only heard bits and pieces from the adults in our family. As for the explosion, rumors say it was a deliberate, malicious attack. My family even sent people over to offer help right after hearing the news.”

Kian didn’t know much about the events of 20 years ago; he was only a few years old at the time.

He just remembered the adults lamenting that the head of the Hale family, such a brilliant man, had died in that explosion. It was a great loss.

The entire family of three died in the blast. No one survived.

After listening to everything Kian told her, Zora lost most of her curiosity about the Hales.

She had once secretly guessed her mentor might be linked to them, but knowing how shallow their current medical skills were, she quickly dismissed the thought.

It must have just been a pure coincidence after all.

The two soon headed back home together.

During the following two days, Zora stayed at the Marlow Manor, keeping Floyd and Opal company.

She only headed back to school with Reed on Monday morning.

Reed had flown into a rage after learning about all the trouble at school over the weekend, even wanting to march straight to the police station to confront Jolie face-to-face.

“Have you guys heard the news? Tessa finally woke up at last! I haven’t slept well at all, worrying about her these days.”

As soon as Zora stepped into school, she overheard Easton chatting with Hallie and their other classmates.

After another round of thorough examinations last Saturday, doctors were shocked to find the blood clot inside Tessa’s brain had naturally shifted to a completely safe position without any external intervention.

Kian immediately scheduled the surgery for the next day, and the whole procedure went perfectly smoothly. Everyone received the happy news that Tessa had fully regained consciousness early that morning.

“Thank goodness she’s awake. She’s just too soft-hearted. Jolie nearly killed her, and she actually chose to let her off the hook.”

Hallie had also gotten wind of what happened, but thinking about Tessa’s decision made her speechless.
