:
Yale felt utterly disappointed with Jolie deep down.

It was plainly Jolie who was in the wrong this time, yet their mother insisted on shifting all the blame onto Zora.
When Holden decided to come find Zora, Yale and Anton had tagged along. They had planned to leave soon after, until Wendy insisted on joining them too.
No one expected her to fly off the handle and try to hit Zora the moment she arrived.
Didn’t she realize that one slap would end any chance of reconciliation?
Anton kept silent and did not argue back.
He still could not get over the fact that Jolie was the one who had caused him severe stomach trouble the whole afternoon.
He also kept thinking about what Jensen had said before-whether Jolie had truly picked that jewelry set because she thought their mother would love it, or simply because she wanted it for herself.
Looking back on past incidents, Anton realized similar things had happened time and again. Every month, Jolie would drag him out at least twice to pick gifts for Wendy, yet their mother barely liked any of them, and most of those presents always ended up in Jolie’s possession.
It suddenly dawned on him that the sister he had grown up alongside was nothing like the kind person he had always believed her to be.

“Even if Jolie messed up, it’s all Zora’s fault in the first place!” Wendy burned with rage after being scolded by her sons. “Why couldn’t she settle family matters privately instead of making a huge scene all over school? She’s nothing but bad luck for this family! If she’d never come back home, none of this chaos would have happened. Jolie wouldn’t have acted out like this either-it’s all Zora who drove her to it. Zora is the root of all trouble. I wish I’d never given birth to her!”
These past few days had worn her out completely. She stared fiercely at Zora, who was now safely guarded by the community security guards, filled with nothing but hatred.
The way she looked at Zora was no longer that of a mother toward her child, but like gazing straight at a bitter enemy.
Hearing her vicious insults, Zora curled her lips and replied in a calm, indifferent tone.
“Since I’m the bad luck charm, what does that make you? The mother of bad luck? That would make your three sons bad luck number one, two and three too. Your whole family is just as unlucky as I am.”

She must have spent too much time around Leighton lately, for her way of speaking had started to resemble his sharp, unyielding style.
The security men standing guard could barely hold back their smiles upon hearing her deadpan retort.
“Zora.”
The three Knox brothers all frowned deeply at her words.
“Zora!”
Enraged beyond reason, Wendy broke free from Yale’s grasp and tried to charge straight at Zora.
She had never endured so much grievance in her entire life as she had these days, and she firmly thought this daughter of hers brought nothing but misfortune.
“You’ve lived off our family and used everything we own. How dare you talk to me like this!”
She was stopped halfway by Holden, while the tall security staff formed a solid barrier around Zora. They could not even get close enough to touch her, only catching faint glimpses of her figure through the gaps between the guards.
“Zora, Mom hasn’t gotten proper rest lately and doesn’t mean what she says. Please don’t take her harsh words to heart,” Holden said helplessly, truly worn out by Wendy’s stubborn temper.
“How much money have I spent of yours? Give me a total. I’ll pay you back,” Zora said in a steady, emotionless voice.
“Pay us back? Can you even afford it? You grew up in the sticks. The one who raised you was a farmer. How much money could you possibly have?” Wendy sneered openly, looking down on Zora with undisguised contempt.
“Mom!” Yale felt his patience snap completely after hearing such cruel remarks.
He knew for certain that things were now entirely beyond repair between them and Zora.
“Mom, what are you saying?” Anton was equally stunned by her hurtful words.
“You’re not thinking straight right now. Let’s head back to the car first.” Holden did not dare meet Zora’s eyes, growing flustered and desperate to drag Wendy away before she said anything worse.
“Just tell me how much I cost in the two months I was there. Whether I can afford to pay it back is none of your concern,” Zora shot back, her eyes filled with obvious mockery.

“One million dollars. Do you have that much?” Wendy blurted out in a fit of fury. No one had ever dared defy her so openly in all her decades of life.
She then turned sharply to her three sons and snapped, “And all three of you stay quiet too! Didn’t she act all tough and claim she wanted to cut ties with us? Then let’s settle every single account clearly with her. Let her see exactly how insignificant she is without the Knox family backing her up.”
Caught between their mother and Zora, the three brothers were stuck in an awkward dilemma, overwhelmed with a splitting headache.
They already regretted coming here to look for Zora today.
“One million dollars? Do I look like an easy mark to you?” Zora stared at Wendy speechlessly.
“You’ve eaten our food, lived under our roof, and used all our belongings. I’m not even counting the clothes and jewelry. You’re getting off easy.”
