Zora did not turn him down and walked over to the kitchen counter.
The warm milk was ready soon, and Leighton handed it over to her.
“Thank you, Leighton.” Zora held the glass with both hands.
“You’re welcome.”

Leighton stroked her hair gently, a soft smile curving his lips. He reached out to smooth down the messy little tufts sticking up on top of her head.
“I’ll go make you some pasta,” he said before turning toward the kitchen.
Zora sat by the counter, sipping her milk slowly while watching him busily work inside the kitchen.
“Aren’t you heading to work today?”
Leighton was always swamped with work, and Zora had her own classes at school. They barely got to see each other except in the evenings.
Ever since she moved in, the two had grown much closer day by day.
“I’ve got some personal matters to take care of today, so I won’t go into the office. I have to leave soon, though, and I might not make it back in time to cook dinner for you. I’ll have meals delivered to you later. Stay home safely, and call me anytime you need anything.”
Leighton set a steaming plate of pasta down in front of Zora and sat across from her.
“Got it.”
Zora blew on the noodles to cool them down a little before taking a bite. She froze for a second upon hearing he was leaving, then nodded slowly in understanding.
“I’m planning to head over to the Marlow Manor this afternoon,” Zora said, sharing her plans.
It had been Friday the day before. Opal had heard she was on break and asked her to come visit. Besides, there was a package delivered to the manor meant for her, which arrived the previous day with no sender noted.
“The temperature has dropped lately. Remember to put on a coat before you go out. Text me once you arrive safely so I won’t worry.”
Leighton never restricted where she went, only speaking to her in a soft, caring tone.
It was already early October, and the weather had gradually turned cooler as autumn settled in.

After Zora finished her meal, Leighton picked up the bouquet of white daisies placed on the coffee table and prepared to leave.
He knew he would be out for quite a while, so he had waited until she woke up just to talk things through with her.
After he left, Zora tidied up her things. She took the vitality pills she had prepared for Opal and the ginseng sent over by Earl, then headed back to the Marlow Manor.
“You’re here at last!” Opal had been keeping an eye out in the yard. The moment she spotted Zora, she walked over with a bright smile.
“Grandma,” Zora greeted her softly.
“Hurry inside. I’ve asked the pastry chef to make all kinds of delicious treats just for you.” Opal took her hand and led her toward the living room.
“Alright.”
“Welcome home, Zora! You grow prettier every time I see you.”
Floyd had skipped his usual gathering with old friends to play board games and drink coffee that day. He had been reviewing old game records in his study, and came out right away once Paul told him Zora had arrived.
“Grandpa,” Zora smiled and called out politely.

“How are things going between you and Leighton? If he ever treats you badly, I’ll help you find a new place to stay right away.”
Opal sat down on the sofa with Zora, carefully checking if she had lost weight, eaten well, or suffered any grievances.
“It’s fine, Grandma. Leighton treats me really nicely,” Zora replied with a gentle smile.
“I can tell you get along wonderfully well. Don’t listen to all those bad rumors about him. He’s actually such a kind soul, and he’s been through so much hardship that he truly deserves care and comfort.”
Seeing her cheerful smile and lively eyes, Opal knew Zora was telling the truth.
Staying with Leighton made her feel far more relaxed and free from pressure.

She tidied Zora’s hair tenderly while chatting with her.

Zora could faintly sense there was a deeper meaning hidden behind her grandmother’s words.
Later that noon, after having lunch together, Opal waved Walter over.
Paul walked forward holding a small box in his hands.
“This package arrived here yesterday while you were out, so I signed for it on your behalf.”
“Is this meant for me?” Zora took the box with a confused look.
Ever since she moved out of the Marlow Manor, she had told everyone to send all parcels to her new address at Aria Estates. There was no reason for anything to be delivered here
anymore.
What’s more, the box was far too small to hold the medicinal supplies she had ordered.
A certain thought crossed her mind, and her fingers tightened firmly around the box at once.
“What’s wrong, honey?” Opal noticed her odd reaction and asked in concern.
“Nothing at all, Grandma. I made plans to hang out with Hallie; she must be waiting for me outside already. I’ll come keep you company again some other day.”
Zora quickly took out all the gifts she had prepared for every family member.
“These vitality pills are for you, Grandma. This ginseng is for Grandpa, perfect for him to brew while he goes fishing, and it helps ease headaches. This herbal sachet is for Jensen, this nourishing soup mix is for Kian, this bruise relief ointment is for Reed, and this one is for Paul.”
No longer willing to stay any longer, she spoke in a hurry and got ready to take her leave.
