A faint smile flickered in Leighton’s calm eyes.

He rubbed his aching, stiff neck, put his bowl into the kitchen dishwasher, then returned to his bedroom.

The room light was already on. While Zora’s room had been completely redone, his remained the same-a minimalist, black-and-white space.

Leighton unbuttoned his shirt slowly and went into the bathroom to wash up.

Fifteen minutes later, he came out wearing cozy home pajamas, his half-dried, messy hair scattered casually.

He paid no heed and lay straight down on the bed.

He closed his eyes, yet he could not fall asleep at all.

His mind was wide awake. Though his taut nerves were sending out exhaustion warnings, he had no desire to sleep.

There was no more soft voice beside him, no more shy, clumsy words spoken just to chat and ease his mind.

He used to stay up late all the time and never felt uneasy, but after going to bed early for just a few days, he grew inexplicably restless.

His body, long used to staying up late, began to protest, dragging his mood into quiet irritability.

Recalling every gentle reminder telling him to rest early, Leighton forced his eyes shut. Yet he suddenly opened them wide the next second. Countless bloody scenes flooded his mind. His hands tightened over the quilt, and blue veins bulged on his forehead.

The bright ceiling lamp dazzled his sight, and his long eyelashes trembled slightly.

He reached under the pillow and took out a small herb sachet.

It had been quite a while, and the herbal scent had faded a lot. These days, being urged to sleep on time every day, he had not relied on this sachet to fall asleep for days.

He placed the palm-sized sachet beside his pillow.

The faint herbal fragrance filled his nose, smelling just like Zora.

Breathing in the mild scent, it felt as if the girl who made it was staying right by his side.

Leighton closed his eyes again. Thick, heavy, dark red bloody images surged into his mind bit by bit. His breathing grew heavier, and his knuckles turned pale from tension.

His chest rose and fell rapidly. He struggled hard to hold back the surging chaotic emotions inside, forcing himself not to open his eyes. In the end, he abruptly sat up and reached for something on the nightstand.

He held a wooden porcelain bottle in his hand, pulled off the cork, poured out two brown pills, and swallowed them quickly.

A faint sweet taste spread in his mouth. He leaned his broad back against the nightstand, slowly soothing the panic and unease in his heart.

Staring blankly at the wooden bottle in his hand, he sank into a daze.

His thoughts were in a fog. His grip tightened on the bottle. Then, in his mind’s eye, a pair of clear, clean eyes appeared, looking up at him from a small face.

“Don’t think about anything.”

All messy thoughts faded away, replaced by her earnest reminders.

“You need to sleep.

“Eat properly, or your body won’t hold up.

“I will nurse you back to full health, trust me.

“Come find me whenever you can’t sleep.

“Can you really fall asleep?”

His body slid slowly down against the nightstand. His cold, tired eyelids drooped gradually. The lingering sweetness slipped down his throat, warming his cold limbs little by little.

When he closed his eyes once more, all he saw was her worried gaze. The faint herbal scent cleared away the bloody nightmares that tried to come back and haunt him.

Soon enough, the weekend arrived.

When Zora woke up, she was utterly surprised to find Leighton staying home instead of heading to the company as usual.

“Leighton.”

Still half-asleep with messy tufts of hair sticking up on her head, Zora looked at him in

The man stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, dressed entirely in a plain black shirt and casual trousers. His face looked cold and indifferent, carrying a heavy, gloomy aura that revealed his bad mood.

The bright morning sunlight streamed through the glass, yet it could not chase away the loneliness shrouding him.

A bunch of white daisies was placed on the living room table.

“You’re awake, Zora. What would you like to eat? I’ll have someone send it over right away.”

Leighton was on a call in the living room. He hung up the phone the moment he heard her voice. Turning around, he softened his cold expression at the sight of her drowsy look, and a warm smile curved his lips, brightening his deep eyes.

“I’m not hungry yet.” Zora shook her head, fully waking up gradually.

She rarely had an appetite in the early morning and usually skipped breakfast on days she did not need to go to school.

“Let’s drink some milk first, then I’ll cook you something. Skipping breakfast hurts stomach.”

It was summer, and everyone lost their appetite easily in the morning.

Leighton walked over to the kitchen island, opened a bottle of milk, poured it into a glass, and put it in the microwave to warm it up.
