Chapter 199 A Day That Always Ends in a Fight

He barely spared them any time on ordinary days.

“A seasoned diplomat like you even needs my snacks?” Leighton looked at her.

“I just never get the chance to shop for them myself. I heard you’re staying with a girl lately. Living with a girl sure comes with plenty of little rules you need to keep in mind…”

Celine spoke thoughtfully.

“Send me the list of rules then.” Leighton glanced over indifferently.

Garrett let out a cold snort from the head of the table.

He had gone out of his way to get those snacks, yet his daughter could easily ask for them just like that. This boy was totally double-standard, beyond any doubt.

“Eat. I’ve got things to do after,” Leighton said.

“You’re not staying here for the night?” Garrett frowned tightly. It was rare for his youngest son to come home, yet he planned to leave so soon, and his grip on his fork tightened unconsciously.

“Yeah.” Leighton’s expression remained unchanged.

“You still insist on leaving on such a meaningful day! Do you even have any respect for your late mother?” Garrett snapped sharply in anger.

“Dad, Leighton just got back. Let’s all enjoy our meal peacefully. Mom would never wish to see us arguing and upsetting each other; it would only trouble her in peace.”

Seeing the situation turning tense at once, Celine quickly stepped behind Garrett and soothed him gently.

Garrett and Leighton never failed to clash every time they met, always parting ways on bad

terms.

If their late mother knew how hostile they had grown apart after her passing, her heart would surely break.

Under the dining table, Finn pressed a hand lightly on Leighton’s leg and shook his head at him in warning.

Leighton only gave him a cold side glance and said nothing.

“Does he look like he even cares about his mother at all?” Garrett glared at Leighton with burning frustration in his eyes.

With those words, Leighton set down his utensils straight away, ignoring Finn’s attempt to stop him, then stood up and walked out without hesitation.

The barely eased tension between father and son plunged straight back to freezing point in an instant.

The creamy mushroom stew specially prepared for him sat untouched on the table.

“Leighton!” Celine hurried to call after him, yet she could not leave her father behind either.

Garrett had recently gone through a full-body checkup, and all the old hidden injuries and chronic illnesses from his younger days had flared up, leaving him unable to bear any anger or emotional turmoil.

Leighton would usually never hold grudges against his father, but things were different today.

After what happened more than ten years ago, the father and son who used to be close had turned cold overnight. They were never openly hostile, yet all the genuine familial warmth had vanished completely.

“Insolent fool! Don’t you dare set foot in this house again if you leave now!”

Overwhelmed by rage, Garrett blurted out harsh words.

Leighton paused his steps for a split second, then kept walking without the slightest hesitation.

Garrett stared fiercely at his retreating figure striding out of the living room, his chest heaving violently with anger.

“Dad, I’ll go see him out.”

Finn exchanged a look with Celine, getting her silent approval, then rushed out of the hall to chase after Leighton.

Leighton walked past the long corridor. The entire Pierce Manor was built in classic architectural styles, all done per the preference of their late mother.

Garrett had spared no expense in constructing this mansion, with every single detail crafted to perfection.

“Leighton, wait up.”

Finn soon caught up with him.

“Dad didn’t mean it. You’ve been overseas for two whole years, and this is the first time you’ve

taken the initiative to come home. He’s been looking forward to this day for ages. He truly wants you to stay over. He just didn’t know how to voice his wish to keep you here; that’s why he ended up saying those upsetting words out of impulse.”

“I’m not upset. His health is fragile, please take good care of him together with Celine.”

Leighton spoke in a calm, emotionless tone; he had long known his father’s stubborn temper.

“Do you have enough money on hand? I can transfer some to you.”

Finn did not dare dig deeper into their strained relationship, only worrying whether his younger brother was short on money.

He looked at Leighton with a calm, solemn gaze.

He had heard from Walter that Leighton was running low on funds recently.

Great! Leighton’s finally broke!

“What’s this? Have you got nowhere to spend your money?” Leighton raised an eyebrow teasingly.

“Same for Celine, we both have more savings than we need. Take this as your pocket money.”

Finn dropped the stern formal demeanor he used towards outsiders when talking to his younger brother, speaking softly with a warm smile.

Leighton had always been used to the finer things in life since childhood, insisting on top-tier food, clothes, and drinks. Back in the days, their mother would give generous pocket money to Finn and Celine, and the two siblings would always save every cent just to spend it all on Leighton.

Ever since Leighton was born, they had sworn to protect their little brother with all they had and repay their mother. But later, they lost their mother, and their little brother lost his mother

too.

They couldn’t repay her anymore, so they chose to pour all their care onto their father and Leighton instead.

When Leighton first went abroad, the sudden drop in living standards hit him hard. He once suffered a severe high fever that nearly sent him into a coma. Terrified beyond measure, Finn and Celine rushed overseas without fearing Garrett’s punishment, determined to bring him back home.

They had even arranged all connecting flights ready to take him away, yet Leighton woke up and firmly refused to leave with them.

They had never been able to force this stubborn brother to do anything against his will.

In the end, they stuffed piles of cash into his hands, threatening they would knock him unconscious and drag him back home if he dared turn down their kindness.
