Chapter 207 Playful Banter

Two zeros, just a hundred bucks?

That was way too cheap.

“Too pricey then? Then one zero? I still need to grab a sandwich to fill my stomach. How am I supposed to cook nice meals for you on an empty stomach?”

Thinking Zora found the price too high, Leighton curved his lips into a gentle smile, his eyes filled with tender warmth.

“…You’re that cheap?” Zora mumbled in surprise.

Too expensive was bad, but too cheap was bad too.

It was cheaper than a single steak meal she often had.

She could keep him company with merely ten dollars a day, which meant her ten million dollars could easily support him for a lifetime.

“How much savings do you have anyway? Seems like you’re quite rich.” Leighton looked at her with a faint, amused smile, sensing she had quite a fortune stashed away.

“Fifteen million two hundred thousand.”

Zora trusted him fully and told him the truth without holding back.

She had just gotten back a large sum of money from the Knox family not long ago.

Leighton was truly astonished by how much the young girl owned.

Damn. This girl has money. Ten bucks really is too cheap.

He had always assumed the Knox family treated her poorly and left her with little money. Plus, Jensen had mentioned she barely spent any money given by the Marlow family, so he never expected her to possess such a huge fortune.

Though this amount was nothing more trivial than a pair of fancy cufflinks to him, it was undeniably a massive fortune for ordinary folks.

He could not help feeling that Zora’s background was far more complicated than just being an adopted girl raised in Maplewood.

No ordinary village girl could casually get hold of such valuable herbs.

She seemed naive and ignorant about many worldly things, yet spoke of ten million dollars so casually as if it meant nothing to her.

She never cared whether the Knox family treated her well or badly, like she already had far better people around her and simply looked down on them.

“I messed up my words earlier. What I meant was cutting off one zero from nine zeros total.” Leighton corrected himself earnestly.

“Whoa, there’s no way I can afford that! You’d better open your own diner instead. I’ll just go eat there.”

Zora backed off without hesitation. Nine zeros meant hundreds of millions, a sum completely out of her reach.

This handsome man was way too costly to keep by her side. She would have to sell tons of herbs nonstop just to make ends meet for him.

Her mentor had always warned her that spending too much money on men would only lead to losses and get all her savings swindled away, and Zora always listened closely to her mentor’s advice.

“You’re giving up on me that easily?” Leighton let out a helpless chuckle at her instant retreat.

She really gave up the moment things got tough.

“I guess I’m just not likable enough. Even you don’t want me around…”

Before Zora could utter a single word, Leighton hung his head low. The warm glow in his amber eyes faded gradually, filled with faint sorrow and loneliness, and his straight shoulders drooped slightly.

He looked exactly like a helpless soul abandoned by everyone with no one to care for him.

In an instant, Zora was reminded of his vulnerable state the night before, and her heart ached sharply with heaviness.

“That’s not true at all! I do like you, I just don’t have that much money right now. Wait till I save up enough, I’ll take good care of you for sure.”

Feeling uneasy seeing him upset, Zora bit her lower lip and tried her best to comfort him awkwardly.

“You won’t go back on your word, will you?” Leighton lifted his gaze to meet hers, his deep eyes hiding vague emotions.

“I promise I won’t,” Zora replied without the slightest hesitation.

A hundred million was too much. Selling her wouldn’t even be worth that. She didn’t have it, so it wasn’t lying.

For once, Zora’s brain was working fast.

Leighton could easily tell from her clear eyes that she was not being sincere and was secretly thinking up excuses, yet he did not mind it one bit. All he cared about was that she had given him her promise, and promises were never meant to be broken.

Once a person finds their own ray of sunshine, they would do anything to hold onto it, not purely out of romantic affection, but simply longing to draw warmth from that bright light.

“Aren’t you heading to work today?”

Zora noticed he just sat there quietly watching her eat and could not help feeling confused.

He usually went to the office even on weekends. It was understandable that he skipped work yesterday due to personal matters, but why was he still staying home today?

“I still have to go, I’ll leave right after lunch. What plans do you have for this afternoon?”

He planned to stay and have lunch with her before heading to the company.

“I don’t have anything planned at all.”

Zora had originally intended to check out the house her mentor had left her the key to, yet her physical discomfort made her feel too sluggish to go anywhere.

“How about coming to the company with me? I feel uneasy leaving you home all alone.”

She wasn’t feeling well. Leighton didn’t want her by herself.

Why would he worry about me? I’ve stayed home alone plenty of times before.

Zora found his concern rather unnecessary.

“You’re not feeling well right now. I’m afraid something might happen while I’m away and I can’t rush back in time. Come along with me, bring your favorite tablet too. You can relax and laze around in my office just like you do at home.”

The more he thought about it, the more anxious he became, deciding to take her to work with him was the safest choice.
