Chapter 224 Careful Guardianship
“If I don’t keep an eye on her, she will always sneak extra snacks away.”
Leighton changed his shoes.

Up ahead, Zora had already grabbed a bag of potato chips, a box of cookies, and two packs of dried meat sticks before hurrying straight back to her room.
“I don’t think even your family has ever seen you being such a strict caretaker.”
Jensen spoke frankly, never having imagined Leighton would take care of Zora this well.
He only intended to let Zora stay here temporarily and ask Leighton to look out for her a little, yet now Leighton was taking care of her just like raising a kid, worrying over every little thing.
“I have no choice. You entrusted her to me, so I have to take my duties seriously. If anything happens to Zora, you’ll surely hold it against me.”
Leighton walked toward the living room alongside him.
“It’s just that your place was too quiet. Zora’s here to keep you company. Look at it now, it’s way more lively. It actually feels like a home. Isn’t that a good thing?”
Jensen looked around the transformed apartment.
He was in a rush the last time he visited and never noticed all these changes. Now it felt like an entirely different residence.
“… Yeah, that’s true.”

Leighton did not deny it, a soft smile slowly spreading across his lips.
“You ought to thank Zora. This way, you’ll gain plenty of experience for raising kids in the future.”
Jensen spotted childproof measures fitted around sharp corners and a princess-style bench placed in the garden. Leighton was doing an excellent job acting as her temporary guardian.
All his lingering unease faded away completely at this moment.
“I can always hire nannies to look after my own children someday, but could I ever leave Zora in someone else’s care?”
Leighton hung Zora’s schoolbag by the door and got a glass of water for Jensen.
He would never need to go to such great lengths for his own future kids, since his siblings and elders would all rush to take care of them, leaving him barely any chance to hold his own

Father
Yet he could never rest easy, letting anyone else watch over Zora. She never spoke up even when she got wronged, so he had to stay by her side and protect her personally.
“You’re far more like a qualified brother than I am,” Jensen sighed with mixed emotions.
He failed to give Zora proper care, and now Leighton was doing a far better job than him.
“I appreciate your recognition. I will never fail the trust you’ve placed in me.”
Leighton smiled faintly and clinked his glass against his.
“Cut to the chase. You didn’t bring me up here just to brag about being a good brother, didn’t you?”
Jensen leaned back casually against the sofa.
The next second, Leighton dropped a bombshell that made him sit bolt upright instantly.
“Asher might still be alive.”
The next day, Leighton drove Zora over to the Sloan family residence. Zora turned her head and looked at the man beside her in the car.
“Leighton, I’m going to my godparents’ place. Make sure you eat well while you’re home alone.”
“Worried I won’t take good care of myself?”
Leighton kept his eyes fixed on the road ahead. He stopped the car at a traffic light and turned to glance at her, warm tenderness shining in his eyes.
“Tristan said you get so wrapped up in work that you forget everything else. If I don’t stay you, you won’t even bother to cook anything,” Zora said earnestly.

Tristan had told her all of that last time when she was bored at Leighton’s office.
“He dared to snitch on his boss? I’m cutting his paycheck when I get back.”
Leighton raised an eyebrow playfully.
Right then, Zora reached out and tugged lightly at his sleeve.
“He only told me because I asked him to. Don’t dock his salary.”
She shook his arm gently.

“You’re using your cute tricks again. How can I possibly say no to you?”
Leighton lowered his gaze to stare at her soft fingers holding his sleeve, his voice laced with
amusement.
He could tell she had figured out he always gave in to her gentle pleas. She tugged his sleeve asking for snacks last time, and now she was pleading for Tristan.
“Then let me make up the deducted money for him, okay?” Zora suggested after a moment’s thought.
“No way.” Leighton refused firmly. The traffic light turned green and the car moved forward again.
“Then what can I do to make you spare his salary?”
Regular employees barely earned enough as it was, it would be such a shame to cut their wages.
“Tell me what you were thinking about when you stared at me yesterday, and I’ll consider it.”
Leighton had been dying to figure out what was on her mind when she looked at him strangely the day before, and this was the perfect chance to get an answer.
She had glanced at him countless times yesterday; how could she remember exactly which moment he was referring to and what she had been thinking back then?
“Can you give me a hint about which time you mean?” Zora asked.
2
“…So you’re saying you stared at me for so long you don’t even remember when?”
Leighton smiled warmly, speaking in a slow, teasing tone.
“…Fine then, go ahead and deduct his salary.”
Zora gave up instantly. Since the money wasn’t hers, she felt no pity at all.
Let Tristan feel the heartache instead, and hold his grudge against the stingy Leighton.
“If Tristan finds out you gave up saving his paycheck so easily, he’ll probably cling to your legs and beg for mercy.”
Leighton fell silent for a second, amused by how quickly she backed down.
“He’ll cling to your legs crying instead of mine anyway.”
“Alright, I’ll give you a hint. It was when you teamed up with Jensen to gang up on me.”
