Leighton gave in and stopped teasing Zora, choosing to guide her to open up to him more gently instead.
“We never teamed up to pick on you,” Zora argued firmly, refusing to let him wrong them.
She had never teamed up against him with Jensen; everything they said was nothing but the truth.
“Alright, if you say you didn’t, then you didn’t. Now tell me what was on your mind back then.”
Leighton did not dwell on the trivial matter. What he cared about most was how she truly saw him in her heart.
“I don’t think you’d want to hear it.”
Zora tilted her head up to look at him, recalling her thoughts from the previous day, certain he would dislike her words.
“Just say it to me.”
He’d long lost all his pride in front of her anyway; things couldn’t get any worse.”
“Are you really sure you wanna know?” Zora stared at him earnestly.
“Go on.”
“…I think you are actually kind of human.”
Zora picked her words cautiously.

A smile was just about to tug at Leighton’s lips when it froze instantly.
“Just like Hallie said, once emotions pile up to the limit, people just want to let loose and go wild-basically act out of character.”
Leighton fell speechless, caught completely off guard by her blunt remark.
His smile faded away completely, and his expression turned gloomy in an instant.
“I told you you wouldn’t like hearing that,” Zora mumbled softly, glancing at his sullen face.
“Zora, do you want to switch classes? I can arrange that for you easily. Hanging around Hallie all day has clearly rubbed off on you badly.”
Leighton took a deep breath.

His lovely, well-behaved girl had picked up all sorts of odd and unrefined phrases from her friend.
Like that time she mentioned some “big monster” and “little monster.” It made his heart jump.
After looking it up online, he found it implied separation, leaving him quite flustered.
This girl was right in front of him. Even if they ever separated, it wouldn’t be life or death.
“I don’t want to.”
Zora shook her head firmly.
Leighton only said that casually, having no real intention of getting her transferred.
“Then… are you still going to cut Tristan’s paycheck?” Zora asked cautiously again.
“If I say yes, are you gonna call me a liar again?”
Leighton felt a surge of helplessness. She was still worrying nonstop about his assistant’s salary.
In fact, he had totally allowed Tristan to share those private things with Zora, yet she knew nothing about it and genuinely feared he would punish the hardworking assistant.
Zora stayed silent, but her clear eyes said everything.
Leighton was so annoyed that he wanted to scream, but he had to keep both hands on the wheel.
“Don’t be mad. Have this.”

Seeing him looking dejected, Zora fished out a piece of candy from her small bag, unwrapped it, and held it out to him.
The candy was sent by her mentor not long ago. She was only allowed one each day, and she chose to give her daily share to him.
“Are you trying to cheer me up?”
Leighton looked at the candy, then at Zora’s serious face, and a warm smile crept back onto his lips uncontrollably.
Zora did not answer. Was she comforting him? She supposed so.
She was never good at soothing others, but she felt bad for upsetting him and wanted to brighten his mood.
Her silent admission made Leighton lean down gently and take the chocolate candy from her

“Where did you get this chocolate? It’s actually really good. I’ll have someone send more over.”
The rich, unique flavor melted smoothly on his tongue. It was seriously good.
He had clearly noticed the faint trace of reluctance in her eyes earlier-she had been hesitant yet still chose to give it to him without hesitation.
His heart was filled with warm sweetness instantly.
It seemed he did hold a special place in her heart after all. She was even trying to make him feel better.
She was still new to comforting others, and he was most likely the very first person she had ever tried to cheer up.
The thought filled him with pure joy.
He would never turn down her kindness, and he planned to buy tons more of such sweets for
her.
“Someone gave it to me. He made it himself. You can’t buy it anywhere.”
Zora felt a little reluctant to part with it at first, but the feeling faded quickly. She was more than willing to share it with Leighton.
Seeing his handsome face light up with a smile again made every bit of hesitation vanish.

“Then I’ll have my people try to recreate the recipe, or we can pay your friend to make more for you,” Leighton suggested thoughtfully, already regretting eating the precious candy.
Now that it was gone, he could only think of ways to make it up to her.
“It’s fine. I still have plenty left to enjoy,” Zora smiled softly, her eyes bright and pure.
She had no idea where her mentor resided, and their contact was always one-sided.
She still had a whole jar of those candies at home. She believed her mentor would come back to her once she finished them, and this thought made every ordinary day feel worthwhile,
“Call me anytime you need anything.”
Leighton pulled up outside the residential district where the Sloan family lived.
Work at the company had gotten extremely busy lately, and he was relieved that Zora could stay here with Hallie for company.
