She finally held back and rested her head on Zora’s chest. “Zora, yours are so soft. Why are mine so flat?”

Zora’s face flushed bright red in an instant.

“Let me put medicine on your shoulder.”

Zora looked at her shoulder, which was covered in dark bruises.

“Zora, why are you so adorable?” Seeing her dazed look, Hallie couldn’t help bending down and pinching her chubby cheek gently.

“Zora, it seems my cousin hasn’t treated you badly at all.”

Hallie stroked her plump, bouncy, and smooth cheek and sighed with emotion.

She once thought her cousin had no idea how to take good care of others, yet after careful observation, Zora hadn’t lost a single ounce of weight. She even looked more well-nourished than when they first met at the start of the semester.

“He treats me very well.”

Zora spread the healing ointment on Hallie’s injured shoulder, utterly confused why everyone kept worrying that Leighton would mistreat her. Did everyone really see him as so untrustworthy?

“Hallie, why do you all think he can’t take good care of me?” Zora asked out her inner confusion.

“He can’t even look after himself properly, let alone take good care of you.

“When we were little, Leighton was the ideal child everyone admired. Everyone in the residential compound adored him, and he was always polite and sensible. But after certain things happened and my aunt passed away, he shut everyone out completely. He became cold, aloof, and distant, always keeping his guard up.

“No matter how often he smiles and looks easy-going, few of his smiles hold genuine warmth. He rarely opens his heart to anyone, and none of us can ever tell if his smiles are sincere or just a disguise.

“You haven’t known him for long. We all wondered if he let you stay by his side just because Jensen asked him to watch over you, or merely because you could ease his insomnia. No one can ever figure out what he is thinking, nor how sincere his care for you truly is.

“That’s why we were all worried he couldn’t take good care of you. But now I’m totally relieved. I can tell he truly cares about you. You smile far more often than you did when we first met.”

After finishing applying the medicine, the two lay on the bed chatting casually.

Yesterday, the second Leighton heard Zora was in trouble, he rushed over.

Hallie knew if it had been her in trouble, he would have only sent Tristan to handle it in his place. The only reason he came himself was Zora.

When he heard the filthy insults Evan uttered, his face turned terrifyingly cold, consumed by genuine rage. Evan was definitely going to pay a heavy price for his words, and Leighton would surely teach him a harsh lesson.

“Your aunt? Is that his mother? Has she passed away?”

Zora had barely heard anyone talk about Leighton’s past. It was only now that she realized no one had ever mentioned anything about his mother around her.

Hallie nodded. “Yes. Her name was Vienne Hartwell. Isn’t it a beautiful name? Leighton inherited his striking good looks from her. She was once the most beautiful woman in Seacrest, talented in all elegant arts, and also an outstanding military physician with extraordinary capabilities.”

Thinking of Leighton’s handsome face, Zora could hardly imagine how breathtaking his mother must have been.

“I thought your mother’s last name was Morgan?”

“My aunt took my grandmother’s family name, while my mother took my grandfather’s,” Hallie explained.

“Hallie… what did those messages you sent me last Saturday mean?”

That Saturday, they had gone out shopping together, which was also the night Leighton got dead drunk. After hanging out downtown, Hallie had invited Zora to head home with her, but Zora had refused. Later that night, Hallie texted again, offering to come pick her up.

Zora could not figure out her intentions, yet she could feel the genuine concern hidden in those messages.

“That day was my late aunt’s birthday. He always falls into a terrible mood whenever this day comes. I was afraid he might hurt you in his low spirits. Later, I guessed he would not head home that night, so I didn’t insist you come back with me.” Hallie let out a soft sigh.

Their worries turned out to be unnecessary, for Leighton was in a fairly good mood the next day.

Hallie still didn’t know Leighton had gone home that night.

Jensen had originally planned to send Leighton somewhere else to rest, yet Leighton kept insisting on heading back home, saying there was a kid at home and he was worried she’d be scared alone.

No one knew about this private conversation that night, save for the two people who were

present.

“Does his insomnia stem from your late aunt?”

Zora thought of how lonely and sorrowful he had seemed that night.

From Hallie’s words, she could tell Vienne must have been an incredibly kind and gentle

woman.

Only such a wonderful person could have raised the lovely, well-liked boy Leighton used to be in his childhood.

“Yes… she passed away 16 years ago.”

A heavy veil of sorrow lingered in Hallie’s tone the moment she spoke of Vienne.

Sixteen years ago, Leighton was only eight years old.

“Hallie, do you know how she passed away? His insomnia has grown extremely severe. There is a deep knot trapped inside his heart, and her death must have left a permanent shadow on him. I can only temporarily soothe his sleeplessness, but unless he untangles that inner pain, his insomnia will never fade away, and his fragile health will keep deteriorating little by little…”
