Chapter 26 Unspoken Resentment

Zora sat obediently

She only came down because her grandma had called her.

“Zora.”

Wendy watched her daughter walk straight past her to sit by Opal, not even acknowledging her. Hurt flashed in her eyes.

Zora hadn’t called her “Mom” since that day.

‘Zora, did you sleep well?”

Opal ignored her daughter’s pained look and took Zora’s hand.

‘Yes,’ Zora replied softly.

Her voice was gentle, nothing like the cold distance she showed the Knox family.

That’s good. All I want is for you to eat well, sleep well, and be happy.”

Opal’s eyes held warm, natural affection.

olie stared at Zora’s new limited-edition dress, her fingers tightening almost imperceptibly.

Why can’t that old woman see me at all after all these years I’ve spent trying to please her?

She even told me not to come to the Marlow Manor so often.

‘wouldn’t even get to see her if I hadn’t come with Mom.

Why does she love Zora so dearly when they’ve only met a few times?

ealousy burned inside Jolie, nearly swallowing her whole.

she didn’t understand why Opal had disliked her for over a decade. She’d always been polite and well- behaved during her visits, even when other kids misbehaved.

But Opal had always been cold to her, no matter how sweet or caring Jolie acted.

Before Zora came back, Opal hadn’t ignored her this completely, hadn’t been this sharp.

dilib

Jolie had sucked up to her for ten years and never gotten a kind look.

She’d thought Opal just preferred boys-but the way she treated Zora proved that wasn’t true. Opal clearly loved Zora.

Jolie was barely allowed inside the Marlow Manor, let alone stay over. But Zora got to live here, and Opal fussed over her constantly.

Juhe could barely keep her smile in place.

It’s not fair!

Just because she’s the real granddaughter? –

I’ve called her Grandma for over a decade.

Zora just came back and is already trying to take everything from me.

How can I not see her as a threat?

“Zora, are you doing okay here? Are you uncomfortable? Do you miss me? I’m sorry about what happened before. I was wrong to doubt you. Can you forgive me?”

Wendy felt miserable, shut out while her mother and daughter talked.

She reached carefully for Zora’s hand, gentle and hesitant.

Zora frowned at the touch. Wendy’s hand was soft and warm, but it felt wrong against hers. She pulled away, also taking her hand off Opal’s lap.

“Zora?” Wendy’s heart sank.

Her daughter wouldn’t even let her touch her. She’d really hurt her.

“Zora, we’re so sorry. It was all a misunderstanding. Please don’t be mad. I’m sorry, too. Come home with us-Mom, Dad, and the brothers all miss you.

“It was my fault, not theirs. I’m sorry. Don’t be upset with them,” Jolie said.

She watched Wendy reach for Zora, her sweet smile freezing slightly.

‘Zora, Mom and Jolie already apologized. What more do you want? We didn’t mean it when we said we’d send you away. Don’t be so petty,” Holden said, frowning.

He thought Zora was just throwing a tantrum. They had only been joking around back then, he couldn’t understand why she was being so sensitive and acting out like this.

Opal shot Jolie a cold look. Jolie was pretending to make peace, but really, she was making Zora look stubborn and unforgiving.

“Jolie, Jensen just had flowers delivered. Your mom loves them. Go pick some for her to take home.”

“Mom, we can do that later. Let’s talk to Zora now,” Wendy said.

“Paul, please show Jolie to the garden,” Opal said, ignoring her confused daughter.

“Right this way, Miss Jolie Knox,” Paul said with a polite smile.

Jolie could barely keep her composure. “It’s fine, Mom. I’ll go pick the flowers.”

She knew Opal was deliberately sending her away.

But she didn’t dare upset Opal-she could feel the clear dislike.

As she turned to leave, she shot a chilling look at Zora.
