Chapter 28 We’ll Take Her
‘Now that Zora’s back the daughter you should love is your own blood-Zora!”
Opal was too angry to waste words on her stubborn daughter.
Finished
‘Grandma, it doesn’t bother me. Please don’t get upset,” Zora said, truly worried Opal would make herself
sick.
She hardly cared about the Knox family anymore.
Right now, they meant less to her than her grandma.
‘It’s okay, Zora. I’m strong. Today I’m gonna set your foolish mom straight.”
Opal patted Zora’s hand gently.
Her daughter had been spoiled her whole life-smooth schooling, a loving husband. She’d never faced real hardship, so even now, in her forties, she still couldn’t tell right from wrong.
And Jolie was clearly trouble.
As long as she was around, Wendy and the boys would never win Zora back.
Mom…” Wendy fell silent, unable to argue.
She wanted to say Jolie wouldn’t get in the way, but under Opal’s stare, she couldn’t bring herself to lie.
She didn’t dare talk back, either-her mother was old, and she feared making her ill.
Besides, Wendy glanced at Zora, who was watching Opal with concern. She realized Zora wasn’t how she’d hought.
Zora could be caring. She wasn’t always cold and distant.
‘Grandma, we know we were wrong. Please don’t be angry. We came to take Zora home,” Holden said, his chest tight when Zora calmly said she didn’t care.
୮
“Yes, Mom. We’re sorry. Give us a chance to make it right. Let us bring Zora back,” Wendy pleaded.
She did care. She couldn’t forget Zora’s cold words: “Don’t bother choosing. I’ll just move out.” She knew she’d messed up.
No matter what Zora was like, she was her daughter. As a mother, she should be more patient.
Zora had just come back. How could she have wanted to send her away?
Zora wasn’t bad–she just needed guidance.
Zora had been hard on Jolie, sure, but if she apologized to Jolie, Jolie would forgive her. They could have been a happy family.

Chapter 8 We H Take Her
Why had she ever agreed to send Zora away?
Wendy was drowning inegret.
She was the one at fault.
Finished
She’d barely slept the past two nights, terrified her words had broken Zora’s heart, that her daughter would never call her “Mom” again.
When she did sleep, she woke up sweating from nightmares where Zora rejected her.
Her heart hammered with a frantic, underlying dread.
་
“You shouldn’t be asking me. You didn’t hurt me,” Opal said coldly.
“Zora, come home with me. Let me make it up to you,” Wendy begged, eyes hopeful.
‘Grandma, I don’t have to stay here if you don’t want me to,” Zora said, not looking at Wendy.
She stared only at Opal, her voice soft as a butterfly’s wing-light, but easily torn.
That tiny tear felt like a knife twisting in the heart-a small pain to the one holding it, but permanent damage to the butterfly.
She thought Opal wanted her gone, sending the Knox family to take her away.
She didn’t need to be passed back and forth like a ball. She loathed that feeling more than anything. She’d
eave on her own.
Zora, this will always be your home. Stay as long as you want. My door is open forever. You don’t have to go back if you don’t want to. I can take care of you Opal said quickly, squeezing her hand when she saw Zora’s unease.
Zora pressed her lips together. “Okay.”
But Opal could feel her withdraw. The closeness they’d built in two days was gone, replaced by the same cold distance from when she first arrived.
r
‘Leave. I’ll raise Zora. If your family can’t look after two girls, we’ll take her. I won’t let her suffer, Opal said, waving them away, her heart aching.
She wished she’d never let Wendy visit.
Wendy had said she only wanted to see Zora, not take her away.
Anyone would be hurt hearing their own parents wanted to send them away.
“Zora, you’re really not coming back?” Holden snapped, shocked.
They’d come personally. Why was she still refusing?
