Chapter 282 He Secretly Fixed It

He carried himself with an easy, laid-back air.

The parents who had already arrived in the classroom lit up at the sight of Leighton and moved to strike up a conversation.

“Who are you here for?” Elara asked, walking beside him into the room.

“Zora,” Leighton replied.

“Wait a minute. This is my daughter’s parent-teacher conference. Why go out of your way to come? Didn’t Zora tell you I’d be attending? Aren’t you swamped lately?”

She never thought he would show up for such an ordinary conference.

“She did tell me. I just figured you’d struggle to keep track of two students when the teacher talks. I’m here to help share the load.”

“If I miss something once, can’t I just listen again?”

Elara shook her head, seeing right through his stubborn excuse.

He claimed he was here to help, but she knew he only came because he cared about Zora.

“Now that I’m here, you can relax. Go find your seat. I’ve got mine.”

Zora’s desk was in the front row, and Leighton headed over to sit down.

The other parents noticed the name card placed on the desk: Zora Hale’s Parent.

Zora had finished all the legal paperwork to change her surname a few days prior. After the incident at the Blakes’ banquet, nearly every prominent family in their social circle had come to know of her.

Leighton glanced sideways after sitting down. The desk next to his was tidy, yet no parent had claimed the seat.

Seated directly in front of him was Ruth Blake, Easton’s brother’s wife.

“Mr. Pierce,” Ruth greeted him politely.

“Hello.” Leighton nodded in response.

“Is Ms. Hale doing all right now?”

Ruth had a poised, dignified bearing. She got along well with Easton and often stepped in to handle matters for him.

Not long ago, Easton had narrowly escaped disaster, all thanks to a timely reminder from Zora. Out of gratitude, she and her husband had sent gifts to Zora right after the incident.

Factional struggles ran rampant within the Blake family. Her husband cherished his only younger brother deeply.

Ruth’s son had also received a bracelet from Zora at the banquet, which had proven incredibly beneficial. The couple had grown quite fond of Zora. They also felt terrible about what had happened to Zora during that banquet.

“She’s fine,” Leighton said.

“Shall our family pitch in against the Knoxes?” Ruth asked.

The Knox family had been hit with one blow after another recently. The Marlow family, the Sloan family and Leighton had all moved against them.

Strangely enough, the overseas MZ Group had also set its sights on the Knox Group, and the Frost family had gotten involved as well.

Surrounded by enemies on all sides, the Knoxes would not hold out for much longer. All of this stemmed from the slap Wendy had delivered, a reckless act that had brought ruin upon her family.

“No, thank you. We’ll handle this on our own,” Leighton declined politely.

They would settle the score for the wrongs done to Zora themselves.

Taking down the Knox Group would be effortless, but they intended to drag it out, torturing them little by little.

Wendy had been quick to raise her hand against others. Now let the Knox family taste the same

torment.

“Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need anything. Ms. Hale is close to Easton, and our family will gladly stand with you,” Ruth said gently.

The two exchanged a few more words before falling silent. Leighton then looked over Zora’s desk, which was decorated in a girlish style.

Cute stickers covered the surface, and plush dolls hung on the wall beside it. The sight made him smile. She really was just a kid at heart.

Books of varying sizes and thicknesses were piled haphazardly across the desk, mixed in with exam papers. The messy arrangement made his fingers itch to tidy things up.

Leighton set about straightening the desk. As he sorted through the drawer, his fingers brushed

against two crumpled wads of paper. He spotted two more tucked into the gap between the desk panels and pulled them out.

He unfolded them slowly and could not help but laugh at what he saw.

She was really fooling herself, hiding the papers she disliked like this, just like a hamster stashing things away.

Amused, he smoothed out the papers one by one. He pulled a pink pen from her pencil case and studied the papers, wondering which subjects she struggled with the most.

“Zora, let’s head back.”

After having lunch with Hallie and the others, they hung out for the rest of the afternoon before going home.

When Zora walked through the door, she found Leighton busy cooking in the kitchen.

She stared at his figure, feeling uneasy. She worried about what her homeroom teacher might have said to Leighton.

As soon as the exam results came out, Clark had called her into the office. She still remembered him asking her seriously if she had issues with the other subject teachers, offering to mediate if needed.

Zora’s face burned with embarrassment at the memory.

She truly wanted to get good grades, but her mind just would not cooperate. Some subjects simply never clicked for her.
