Chapter 287 The Truth Behind the Poison
The bite wound was deep, and blood kept oozing out.

After swallowing the pill, Kimberly wrapped her arms tightly around the cloth doll in her embrace. Her eyes turned red from being forced, and tears rolled down her cheeks one after another.
The sight was heartbreaking.
“Don’t be scared… don’t be scared. Mommy will protect you, baby…”
She held the doll tighter, whispering in a choked voice.
Zora pressed her lips together as she watched Kimberly.
Even without her sanity, she still remembered to protect her child.
“It doesn’t hurt.”
Zora pulled Maya down to sit, then took out medicine powder and sprinkled it carefully over her wound. She finished by wrapping her hand with a roll of gauze.
Meanwhile, the pill seemed to start working on Kimberly.
She curled up on the bed and closed her eyes, still clutching the cloth doll tightly in her hands.
“It’s bleeding so much. There’s no way it doesn’t hurt.”
Zora bent down, disagreeing softly. She wrapped the gauze twice around the wound and tied it into a neat little bow.
Maya asked, “Zora, do you know how my mom got poisoned?”
Their lives had always been ordinary and simple. There was no reason for such a cruel poison like Heart Corroding Poison to end up on her mom.
“Someone must have passed it onto her.” Zora frowned slightly.
“How?” A faint coldness flashed in Maya’s eyes.
“Through intimate relations between a man and a woman. It only works if the two people truly love each other.” Zora spoke in a quiet voice.
This poison truly corroded the heart.
It forced people to watch the person they loved suffer and slowly lose their mind.

No matter how deep a couple’s love was, no one could endure years of watching their lover fall apart.
Even the strongest love would eventually break and fade away.
That was what made the poison so vicious.
Maya’s fingers tightened hard around the armrest of the chair until her knuckles turned white.
It had to be that man.
He had actually used her mother.
Cold rage surged in Maya’s eyes.
Her mom had found that man injured at their doorstep years ago.
She’d cleaned his wounds, taken care of him through his recovery, and eventually fallen in love with him.
No one could have guessed he’d only been using her all along.
“But she must have taken half an antidote before. That’s why she’s lasted this long for over a decade. Normal people can’t bear the constant, burning pain of this poison. Most would die within a year without treatment,” Zora added.
Maya stayed quiet, her lips pressed firmly together.
“Zora, I want to take my mom home to take care of her.” She glanced at Kimberly on the hospital bed.
After running around at the hospital all morning, the two finally returned to the residential complex where Maya rented her apartment.
She lived alone in a clean, tidy two-bedroom apartment. The place was filled mostly with books.
Kimberly was still unconscious. The two wheeled her home carefully and laid her down on the bed to rest.
Since it was the holiday break, Maya had plenty of time to look after her mom properly.
Zora walked out of the bedroom and sat down on the sofa.
It was already past three in the afternoon.

Tired from all the running around, she let out a small yawn and felt her stomach growl with hunger.
Maya tucked the quilt over Kimberly and walked out of the room.
Her heart softened when she saw Zora’s exhausted look.
“You’ve worked so hard today, Zora. What do you want to eat? I’ll cook for you.”
A gentle smile rested on Maya’s beautiful face.
“You’re tired too. Let’s just order takeout and eat together.” Zora waved her hand.
Compared to her, Maya was far more worn out.
“Takeout isn’t healthy. I’ll cook. I can also make some oatmeal for my mom to eat when she wakes up,” Maya said softly.
“Alright, just make whatever is easy.” Zora didn’t refuse.
“Okay.” Maya smiled faintly.
She walked into the kitchen but quickly came back out again.
“Zora, here’s some homemade dried meat I made a few days ago, and these strawberries are already washed. Have some to hold you over first.”
She carried out two plates, one filled with thin slices of dried meat she’d made herself, since she couldn’t eat store-bought snacks.
The other plate was full of fresh strawberries.
“Thank you, Maya.”
Į
Zora was genuinely hungry, and her eyes lit up at the sight of the meat slices.
Maya turned and went back into the kitchen to cook.
While she busied herself in the kitchen, Zora pulled out her phone to scroll through short videos, munching on strawberries and dried meat.
She planned to wait until Kimberly woke up to check her condition before heading home.
By the time Maya walked out of the kitchen, Zora had fallen asleep on the sofa.
She’d been busy for hours and was completely worn out.
Maya slowed her steps, looking softly at the sleeping girl. She grabbed a blanket from the sofa

and draped it gently over Zora.
Zora finally woke up to the smell of home-cooked food.
She sat up just as Maya walked out of the kitchen with a plate of dishes.
“Maya.” The blanket slipped off her shoulders as she sat up.
“Dinner’s ready. Let’s eat.”

Seeing she was awake, Maya set down the dishes, stepped over, picked up the fallen blanket, folded it neatly, and placed it on the side of the sofa.
