Chapter 289 He Cared More Than Anything

After a quick chat, Zora got into the car.

“What’s wrong? Are you upset about something?”

Leighton noticed her odd behavior. She kept furrowing her brows over and over again.

“Nothing.” Zora shook her head.

“Tell me what’s bothering you. Are you feeling sick anywhere?”

Leighton didn’t believe her.

“I didn’t know you smoked.”

Zora turned her head to look at him.

They’d lived together for so long, and she’d never once seen him smoke before today.

“It’s a bad habit. Don’t ever pick it up,” Leighton said seriously.

Zora asked, “How many cigarettes did you smoke?”

“Just two. I don’t do it often.”

He wasn’t addicted at all. He only smoked occasionally when he was in a bad mood.

“You should cut back on smoking and drinking.”

She knew people in their social circle had to drink and socialize a lot, so she never forced him to quit entirely.

Everyone needed a way to let out stress, and smoking and drinking were some people’s ways of relaxing.

She rarely smelled alcohol on him either.

If she hadn’t caught him smoking today, she would’ve never known he smoked at all.

“Alright, I’ll remember. But you’re not upset just because I smoked, right?”

Leighton agreed, gazing at her with obvious concern.

He saw her repeatedly lifting her sleeve to cover her nose.

“It’s just… I’m not used to the smoke smell. It irritates my nose.” Zora glanced away, too nervous

to meet his eyes. She knew he would definitely overreact.

She quietly tightened her grip on her seatbelt.

“How bad is it?”

Leighton had a feeling it was more than a mild discomfort.

He turned on the car’s ventilation system right away.

The cigarettes he smoked were very light, and the car was filled with a nice perfume that usually covered the smoke scent completely. Even so, she still kept frowning.

“It’s just… the smoke bothers my respiratory system. It makes me feel dizzy…” Zora pressed her lips together and mumbled softly.

A sharp, sudden brake screeched through the air.

“Do you need to practice your driving again?!”

Zora jolted forward sharply before the seatbelt pulled her back into place.

“Zora! You didn’t tell me something this important!”

Leighton stared at her, his jaw tight with frustration.

She spoke so casually about it, acting like it was nothing, even though the smoke bothered her that badly.

Leighton pulled over to a safe spot and parked the car.

He got out with her, pulled out his phone, and called his assistant to bring a new car over immediately.

He wouldn’t let her stay in this car for even another second if it made her uncomfortable.

He would never forgive himself if she got sick from the smoke.

“Why didn’t you tell me you can’t stand cigarette smoke before you got in?”

Leighton looked down at her, pulled the remaining cigarettes out of his pocket, and tossed them straight into the trash can.

He even took off his jacket, which smelled faintly of smoke, and threw it away too.

Zora didn’t think it was a big deal. “You only smoked a little. It was bearable, not that bad. I’m just not used to the smell.”

“Let me know right away if you feel even the slightest unwell, okay? Your health comes first.

“We’re staying away from crowded places and smoky areas from now on.”

Leighton was grateful he’d never smoked in front of her before.

If something had happened to her, he would’ve had no one to blame but himself.

Feeling lightheaded from the smoke was far from a minor problem.

“Okay.” Zora nodded obediently.

“Did you buy the flower yourself?”

Leighton glanced at the flower in her arms. It’d wilted a little after a whole day.

“Maya gave it to me.” Zora looked down at the sunflower in her arms.

“Your classmate? The girl I just saw?”

Leighton thought back to the quiet, gentle girl from earlier.

She had a calm, peaceful aura, with steady, tranquil eyes.

“Yeah! She’s the super smart friend I told you about.” Zora nodded excitedly.

“What’s her last name?”

Leighton still couldn’t place why her eyes looked so familiar.

Very few people left an impression on him. He was certain he’d never met her before, yet her eyes felt oddly familiar.

“Cole.”

Leighton repeated the surname silently to himself.

Before he could figure out where he’d heard it before, Tristan arrived with the new car.

It was a black Bugatti La Voiture Noire.

“Leighton, your cars are all so cool.”

Zora’s eyes lit up as she stared at the vehicle. Its dark glossy surface shimmered like scattered starlight.

She remembered watching videos on a neighbor’s phone back in the village. That was where she first saw a car just like this. She ran to find her mentor right after, saying she would earn big money and buy one someday.

Her mentor had told her he’d gift her one when she came of age.

At the time, she’d thought he was joking. Her neighbor had said the car was unbelievably expensive-way too pricey for her to ever afford.

“Do you like it?”

Leighton’s eyes lit up at her praise.

“It’s beautiful.” Zora nodded.

She truly thought the car was stunning.

Only someone handsome like Leighton deserved such a beautiful car.
