All he wanted was to treat her well. He’d take it slow, like a snail, creeping steadily into her heart. He wanted her to know she wasn’t only loved by her mentor.

He wanted her to think of him whenever she ran into trouble.

Leighton held her firmly and walked toward the bedroom.

“You can go work.”

He laid her on the bed and tucked the blankets tightly around her. The thermostat kept the room nice and warm.

Zora saw constant notifications popping up on his laptop. He was clearly busy.

She remembered someone touching her forehead, dabbing something soft on her lips, and pressing a cheek to hers throughout the day. It was him, taking care of her nonstop.

She felt guilty, knowing she’d held him back from his work.

“Call me if you need anything.”

Leighton picked up the tablet that had slid under the covers and turned on auto-scroll for her videos. He fixed her messy hair and spoke softly after getting everything ready.

“Okay,” Zora said.

The room fell quiet, only Leighton’s deep voice lingering. Zora muted her videos just to listen to him.

His voice was incredibly soothing. He’d be a huge hit as a voice actor, and Zora knew she’d spare no expense to support him.

The sound lulled her, and she soon grew sleepy and drifted off.

A voice came over his headset, asking what shape to use for the new tracker icon.

Leighton’s gaze drifted back.

He watched her sleeping soundly, her head tilted on the pillow, and his eyes softened.

“Make it a penguin.”

“A penguin?” The person on the line was surprised, having expected a formal, standard design instead of a random animal icon.

“Yeah, a penguin,” Leighton repeated.

His gaze stayed on the sleeping girl, his usual cold tone melting into gentle warmth.

It reminded him of their first meeting-she was just like a little penguin, only moving when nudged.

“What’s the name?” the caller asked, accepting his decision.

“Z.”

“Just Z? Any special meaning?”

The simple answer took the man by surprise.

“Guess,” Leighton said with a faint smile.

The line went silent.

“We’re done for today. Finish this tomorrow.” Leighton hung up.

It was nearly midnight.

He took off his headset and walked to the bed.

Zora lay on her stomach, facing him. Half her face was buried in the blankets, her warm breath tinting her cheeks a soft pink.

The tablet sank into the soft quilt. Leighton walked over and noticed it was muted.

Looking at the small figure curled up under the covers, his heart softened a little.

He turned off the tablet and set it on the nightstand. Then he lifted her from the tangled sheets and held her in his arms.

“Leighton…” Zora mumbled sleepily. She stirred briefly when he held her, then closed her eyes again, completely trusting.

“Did I wake you?” Leighton tucked her back into bed.

“Sleepy,” she mumbled, nuzzling the pillow.

“Sleep well. I’ll stay with you.”

He tucked her stray hand back under the blankets.

“You don’t have to. Rest too,” Zora murmured drowsily.

“Alright,” Leighton agreed.

She fell right back asleep.

Leighton pulled a chair beside the bed and stared at her peaceful face, eyes full of tender fondness.

He watched her until her breathing slowed and steadied, sound asleep at last.

He carefully lifted the blanket near her feet. She wore a long cream-yellow silk nightgown that covered her fully, only exposing a slim, pale ankle with faint blue veins and delicate bone lines, delicate as a fine doll.

He slowly rolled up the gown’s hem. Its full-length style was plain and modest. He’d chosen it on purpose once the doctor explained her hands would be useless for a while, for it simplified lifting and caring for her.

Bruises covered her pale knees, still swollen after a full day. Kneeling six straight hours had badly damaged her tender skin.

The ointment needed reapplying every five hours.

Leighton picked up the ointment, twisted it open, and squeezed milky white cream onto his palm. A light herbal scent spread as he rubbed his hands to warm the cream up.
