The ointment worked best when warmed up first.

Leighton rubbed the cream between his palms until it was warm. Then he gently pressed his hands to Zora’s bruised knees and rubbed them carefully.
Half asleep, Zora dreamed she was lying in the sun. A tiny puppy ran up with a ball in its mouth, begging her to play. She tossed the ball, the pup fetched it back, and they repeated the game over and over.
After a while, Zora grew tired from running around. She waved at the puppy, letting it know she was done playing.
The puppy instantly looked upset. Its face shifted and suddenly turned into Leighton’s.
His eyes stared straight at her, looking hurt and wronged, as if silently asking why she had stopped playing with him.
Zora woke up with a jolt. She could never imagine Leighton looking so vulnerable.
Once she fully snapped out of her dream, bright sunlight filled the whole room. It was already morning.
“Zora, you’re awake. Are you sore anywhere?”
A soft, kind voice came from beside her bed.
Zora turned her head and saw Opal and Elara sitting there. The second they saw she was awake, Elara stood up quickly, her face lighting up with pure relief and joy.
“Grandma, Mom.” Zora’s eyes curved into a gentle smile.
She tried to sit up on her own, but her arms felt weak and useless.
“Take it slow.” Opal hurried over to steady her, her eyes full of pity. Elara stepped in right away to help as well.
“Zora, why didn’t you call me when you were hurting? I would’ve come to take care of you.”
Leighton had told them Zora was fine. She couldn’t use her hands for the time being. But they had no idea her injuries were this severe. The large purple bruises covering her knees were terrifying.
“Mom, Grandma, I’m okay. I just need a few days of rest, and I’ll be back to normal.” Zora smiled softly at their worried faces.
Just then, Jensen and Leighton walked into the room.

“Zora.”
Leighton’s face filled with worry and relief the second he saw she was awake. He quickly walked over to her bedside.
Jensen had come to check on her the day before, but she had been dead asleep the entire time. By the time she woke up later that night, it was already dark.
Floyd was doing better, but he had still been through a lot and was left with a large wound on the back of his neck. Chet told him to stay home and rest in bed for a while to recover fully.
He had insisted on coming to see Zora, but everyone talked him out of it. They told him it would waste all of Zora’s hard work in saving him if he strained himself. The stubborn old man finally agreed to stay home.
“Zora, how do you feel? Is your hand any better?” Jensen asked, clearly concerned.
“I feel way better. Don’t worry; it’s nothing serious. I’ll heal up soon.”
Her arms felt achy and stiff. She had regained a little strength, but even small movements still stung. She tried to wave them off to reassure them, but her arms simply would not cooperate.
“Let her have breakfast first,” Leighton said, walking over with a bowl of oatmeal.
“You’re right. Let me feed you.”
Opal took the bowl from him and started feeding Zora gently. Leighton just stood aside and watched.

“Reed and Hallie wanted to skip school to come see you,” Elara said. “I told them they could come visit after school.”
Zora would not recover anytime soon, so they got her two weeks off school. Her right hand could not even hold a pen right now. Her other hand was injured too, so heading back to school was risky amid all the bumps and jostling. Staying home to heal was the best choice.
Zora spent the next two weeks recovering at home. Private tutors were arranged to keep her caught up on all her classes.
Hallie and Reed came over constantly to keep her company. Easton, Felix, and Maya also visited her many times.
On workdays when Leighton was busy, he took Zora to his office with him. He had set up a private lounge and study area just for her there.
On weekends, she stayed home to hang out with her friends. Opal came to see her three times a day, sending endless tonics and health supplements to her place.

Whenever Leighton was not around, Opal would sneakily ask the chef to cook extra meat dishes for Zora.
When Leighton caught them, both of them froze, awkward and flustered.
Opal hated that Zora had suffered so much and could not even eat freely. She completely ignored Zora’s packed daily schedule-eight meals a day, plus endless snacks, fruits, and healing soups.
Zora’s days at home were calm, easy, and cozy.
One weekend, Easton and the others stopped by, bringing some big news.
“Zora, Jensen called the police today. The Knoxes got arrested. The whole family is guilty of multiple crimes.”
