Chapter 327 She Doesn’t Need Her Birth Father
“You’re home!” Zora’s face lit up the second she saw Leighton.
She hadn’t seen him all day, and she’d missed him.

“Oh? Did you miss me?” Leighton grinned, reaching down to ruffle her hair when she ran up to him.
“I missed the snacks you usually bring me,” she huffed playfully.
“Hmm, I didn’t bring anything today.”
Leighton dragged his words out, hiding the paper bag behind his back. He lied right to her face, acting totally innocent.
“Seriously? You’re so silly. I can see the bag clear as day.” Zora rolled her eyes at his childish trick.
Maya stood nearby, watching them mess around. Her eyes turned soft and quiet.
“Fine. Here you go. Share these with your friend.”
Leighton pulled out the white paper bag and handed it to Zora.
“Maya, these are fresh pastries,” Zora said. “Take a box home for your mom. They taste amazing.”
She pulled a box out of the bag and pressed it into Maya’s hands!
Leighton glanced outside-the sky was fully dark now.
“My assistant’s downstairs. Let him drive you home.”
“It’s okay. I don’t want to bother him,” Maya said gently. “The subway works perfectly for me.”
“It’s no bother. He’s already waiting in the parking lot.”
*****
After Maya left, Zora noticed something was off.
“What’s on your mind?”
Leighton had been zoned out the whole time after Maya left.
Your friend’s eyes look really familiar. I’m sure I’ve seen them somewhere before.”

Leighton took her hand, walked inside the house, and closed the door.
“Did you meet her somewhere before?” Zora asked.
“No. Just her eyes. They feel weirdly familiar.
“Come here. Let me check your hand.”
He sat her down on the sofa, washed his hands in the kitchen, and squatted down in front of her.
Slowly and carefully, he unwrapped the gauze around her injured hand.
“It’s basically healed. You don’t need this gauze anymore.”
Zora’s hand had gotten better days ago. She’d been using White Jade Balm nonstop, and it helped her skin heal super fast.
The scab used to itch like crazy, and she’d always scratch it without thinking. That’s why Leighton kept wrapping her hand up after putting on ointment-to keep her from messing up the faint scar.
The injury was long gone.
Once the gauze was off, her soft, smooth palm was exposed. A thin, pale scar ran across the middle, ruining her perfect skin.
“Alright.”
Leighton picked up the balm and spread a thin, gentle layer over the scar.
“I heard everything about the Knox family,” Zora said.
She took a bite of a pastry, looking down at him while he tended to her hand.
It tasted like osmanthus. She’d eaten way too many of these lately, so she held the half-eaten pastry out for Leighton.
“Do you feel bad for them?” Leighton took the pastry and looked up at her.
“Not one bit. They brought all this trouble on themselves.”
Zora popped a lemon pastry in her mouth, her cheeks puffing out a little.
“I only have a good life now because all of you protect me. Without you guys, I would’ve died years ago.”
She felt zero sympathy for the Knox family.

That said, she did feel a little sad for Wendy. It wasn’t pity-any woman stuck in that terrible situation would be miserable.
Still, nothing excused what Wendy did to Floyd. It was unforgivable.
Wendy had a sad life, but she had no right to take her anger out on innocent people.
Zora knew she’d been super lucky. If Asher hadn’t saved her all those years ago, she wouldn’t be alive today.
Wayne and Eira deserved every bad thing that happened to them.
Leighton looked at her seriously. “About your birth dad. Do you want us to find him?”
No one saw this wild backstory coming.
Jensen suspected the truth before, but no one thought it was actually real.
Wayne really wasn’t Zora’s biological father.
Zora went quiet for a second and shook her head.
“No, it’s fine. I already have a dad.”
She didn’t care about that random stranger. For all she knew, he could be just as awful as Wayne.
She’d finally gotten rid of the Knox family’s mess, and she didn’t want new problems in her life.
She had her new parents now. She didn’t need a father who never showed up for her.
From what Wayne explained, he’d put aphrodisiacs in that hotel room years ago. Anyone in that room would lose control of their body and mind.
Wendy walked into the wrong room without knowing. She felt sick and out of it, saw a man on the bed, and thought it was Wayne. So she slept with him.
There were only two possible truths about her real father.
Either he was drugged and forced into it, which meant he’d probably hate the fact that she exists.
Or he was the kind of guy who’d sleep with any woman thrown at him-and that kind of person was no good. Finding him would only cause her more trouble.
